About Us
The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences is one of 14 academic departments in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (CAFE). The department’s programs are diverse in both our mission areas – teaching, research and extension – and in our broad areas of interest – crop science, environmental science, plant molecular biology and soil science. The department has over 40 faculty members and 60+ staff members, as well as post-doctoral scholars, graduate research assistants and visiting scholars.

Professor Kawashima has been in the news for his research in gene-silencing and a discovery that may have significant implications for genetic engineering and agriculture.

Poffenbarger was on the cover of the May 2023 issue of CSA News working in the field on research related to the impact of crops on soil organic carbon concentration.
