CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — West Virginia could surpass the 500,000 mark in total COVID cases as soon as this week.
The state Department of Health and Human Resources on Monday reported 303 new cases since Friday, pushing the total since the March 2020 arrival of COVID in the Mountain State to 499,193.
Two more deaths were reported, making the total 6,796 since the beginning of the pandemic in West Virginia.
The daily percent positivity continued to rise, from 2.51% Friday to 3.35% Monday. That comes after state COVID czar Dr. Clay Marsh had noted a rise in the reproductive rate for COVID in the state.
There were 479 active cases as of Monday, slightly up from the 437 reported Friday, according to the DHHR.
COVID test totals don’t include home tests.
DHHR has confirmed the deaths of an 85-year old female from Wetzel County and an 87-year old male from Greenbrier County.
“The COVID-19 vaccine is life-saving and available to all West Virginians ages five and older,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet secretary. “Please make the decision to protect yourself and your family today.”

West Virginians ages 5 years and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination; after the primary series, first booster shots are recommended for those 12 and older. Second booster shots for those age 50 and over that are 4 months or greater from their first booster have been authorized by FDA and recommended by CDC, as well as for younger individuals over 12 years old with serious and chronic health conditions that lead to being considered moderately to severely immunocompromised.
