CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Gov. Jim Justice tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday afternoon, according to a press release from his office.
Upon the sudden onset of symptoms late in the afternoon, the governor immediately sought a COVID-19 test, which came back positive.
Justice is experiencing mild symptoms and is isolating at home, according to the release.
He is being treated by several physicians, including his family physician, Dr. Gary Poling, and Dr. Clay Marsh, the state’s COVID-19 czar.
Everyone the governor has been in close contact with over the past few days is being notified.
The governor is in communication with his chief of staff and office staff to ensure that state government continues to operate smoothly, according to the release.
This is Justice’s second bout with the pandemic disease, having contracted it a year ago in January 2022.
The timing of his illness last year delayed the traditional delivery of his annual State of the State address before a joint session of the Legislature. He delivered the 2023 State of the State last week.
Just after recovering last year, Justice characterized the illness as “nasty” and “tough,” but said his experience would have been much worse if he had not been fully vaccinated.
“These vaccines are safe, and they could very well save your life,” he said at the time. “Me being here talking to you right now may be testimony to exactly just that. If I hadn’t had these vaccines, I would have really been in tough shape.”
The governor noted Tuesday that he remains fully vaccinated and boosted.
