CHARLESTON, W.Va. (W.Va. News) — The state is opening up the old Fairmont hospital to patients as high amounts of COVID-19 infections in Marion, Harrison and Monongalia counties are besieging hospitals in Morgantown and Harrison County, Gov. Justice said Thursday.
Justice noted that "many individuals are delaying care because there are no beds available" at those facilities. "Based on these statistics, there is an immediate need to increase bed capacity at the old Fairmont hospital."
He also touted the efforts of his office as well as WVU Medicine in keeping the facility operational after its closure just as the pandemic was first ramping up in the state — keeping open a community hospital in one of the state's largest cities as well as maintaining a potential COVID overflow facility.
The state will add an extra 65 staff positions at the Fairmont Medical Center to meet the surge, Justice said, adding the facility, in its overflow capacity, will have 42 beds available.
