GILES COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Giles County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the chest and another took two rounds to his shield during a standoff at a home early Thursday morning.

According to Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton, deputies were called to a home on Happy Hill Road in the Fairview Road area of Lynnville shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday, May 18.

Helton said the first call was for an unwanted guest trespassing, but when deputies got there, whoever called for help would not respond.

Then, around 2:30 a.m., deputies went back to the home for a call of shots fired by a suicidal person, according to officials. Law enforcement removed family members from the residence and took them to safety.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) said the man barricaded himself inside the home. Even though authorities tried to convince him to surrender, they were unsuccessful.

Later Thursday morning, when deputies decided to enter the home, officials said the man fired on them.

One deputy took a bullet in the chest, but his ballistic vest saved his life, according to Helton. He was taken to a Pulaski hospital, where he is expected to be alright.

No other law enforcement officers were injured, but another deputy’s shield was reportedly hit by two bullets.

Even though at least one deputy shot back in response to the gunfire, the man inside the house was not hit, according to the TBI.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and its tactical unit was called in to assist with the standoff, which ended around 8 a.m. after the man surrendered to authorities.

Since the TBI is investigating the circumstances that led to the deputy-involved shooting, the agency released a statement Thursday afternoon about the incident, which said, in part:

“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.”
