AND FOR MANY PARENTS AND GUARDIANS, THAT MEANS A CHANGE IN YOUR CHILD’S SLEEP SCHEDULE. >> YEAH, BUT PEDIATRICIANS SAY NOW IS THE TIME TO ESTABLISH HEALTHY SLEEPING HABITS SO THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL TRANSITION GOES SMOOTHLY. DR. KATHRYN LESS IS GENERAL PEDIATRICIAN WITH U.W. HEALTH IN MADISON. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US HERE AT 4:00. FIRST OFF, WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT? >> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. SLEEP IMPACT SO MANY THINGS LIKE BEHAVIOR -- AND IT WILL IMPACT HOW ABLE YOU ARE TO LEARN AND HELP YOU PLAY AND LEARN AND GROW. IT IMPACTS HOW A KID CAN FUNCTION AT SCHOOL AS WELL. WE ARE LOOKING AT THE HOURS THAT A KID NEEDS TO SLEEP WE ARE LOOKING AT NINE-11 HOURS FOR THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GROUP AND HI SACHIN HOURS FOR THE SECONDARY SCHOOLS. >> THAT IS A LOT OF SLEEP. HOW CAN PARENTS PREPARE FOR THAT SMART >> -- PREPARE FOR THAT? >> I THINK THAT YOU CAN PREPARE FOR SCHOOL BEFORE YOU START TO MAKE A SMOOTH TRANSITION. JUST SLOWLY CHANGE YOUR SLEEP SCHEDULE. ONE THING YOU CAN DO IS INCH BACKED BY A FEW MINUTES AT A TIME. WAKE THEM UP ABOUT 15 MINUTES EARLIER AND GO TO BED 15 MINUTES EARLIER. CAN DO THAT A COUPLE WEEKS IT WILL MAKE THE TRANSITION EASIER. TEXT I NEED TO TAKE THESE TIPS MYSELF AREA AND ANY OTHER GENERAL -- SLEEPING TIPS? >> ONE THING THAT PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT -- SLEEP IS IMPORTANT REGARDLESS OF AGE. -- AS KIDS GET OLDER, HAVING YOUR TEENAGER WIND DOWN 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR FOR BED HELPS THE BODY GOING DOWN. -- IT IS BETH -- BATHTIME PRESSURE TEETH. THOSE ARE THE THINGS OLDER KIDS ARE MORE INDEPENDENT BUT HAVE BEEN QUIET READING TIME FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE BED CAN HELP. AND THEN ELECTRONICS CAN BE HELPFUL AS WEALTH WITH PHONES, TABLETS, TV’S CAN HELP WITH THE WIND DOWN PROCESS AS WELL. >> HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO CUT OFF ELECTRONICS AT A CERTAIN POINT? >> THE BALANCE FOR THAT IS PRETTY HELPFUL. THE THING YOU COULD BE WATCHING COULD BE PRETTY ACTIVATING. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS HAVING A WIND DOWN SO IF YOU’RE DOING’S ARE MENTALLY STIMULATING IT WILL BE MAKING
