TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The Tallahassee Police Department has arrested a 17-year-old in connection to a deadly shooting along Peachtree Drive Monday evening.
According to TPD, the teen was sitting on a front porch while holding a gun, and “inadvertently shot“ a man sitting nearby. The man’s family identified him to WCTV as 18-year-old Shawn Ladean Cooper, Jr. They shared Cooper turned 18 just two weeks before the shooting.
Officials said the teen suspect ran from the scene shortly after the incident, and Cooper’s body was found by officers “moments later.”
The teen is charged with manslaughter, according to TPD.
TPD said the 17-year-old “surrendered himself” on Tuesday and was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
WCTV does not normally name underaged suspects in cases, unless they are charged as an adult in a major case. Our newsroom has reached out to the State Attorney’s Office for more information, and this story will be updated with additional details as they become available.
