McDonald's menu additions: New blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll and apple fritter arrive at restaurants Oct. 28

McDonald's is going from spicy to sweet.

Weeks after launching Spicy Chicken McNuggets and its second celebrity collaboration meal with J Balvin, the fast-food giant will add three baked goods to the menu starting Oct. 28.

The new McCafé Bakery lineup will be available all day and features an apple fritter, blueberry muffin and cinnamon roll. McDonald's says the lineup is the first addition of bakery items to the chain's core menu in over eight years, joining cookies and pies.

Linda VanGosen, McDonald's USA vice president, brand and menu strategy, said in a news release that the company has been known for its breakfast menu for almost 50 years.

According to McDonald’s, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania franchisee began experimenting with breakfast items like sweet rolls and doughnuts in 1970. The next year the Egg McMuffin was created and a new breakfast platform was introduced nationwide in 1977.

McCafé coffees have been on McDonald's American menu since 2009. In 2018, U.S. locations served about 822 million cups of hot McCafé coffee, equal to almost 1,600 cups per minute.

Although McDonald's pulled its all-day breakfast menu in March amid the coronavirus pandemic to simplify operations, the new bakery items will be available throughout the day at participating restaurants nationwide.

"We know our customers deserve a break now more than ever, and are excited to give them another reason to visit their favorite breakfast destination by offering delicious flavors they crave, any time of the day," VanGosen said.
