Author of new Blackwell biography shares details about the groundbreaking Upstate graduate

Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman in America to receive a medical degree, from a predecessor to what is now Upstate Medical University. As Upstate marks the 200th birthday of its famous graduate, author Janice Nimura discusses Blackwell's life and times. Nimura's new book, "The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sister Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine," is the story of Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell, sisters from an unconventional family who both became doctors in the mid-1800s and went on to open the first hospital staffed entirely by women, in New York City.
