Polio, a paralyzing disease that is now mostly, but not entirely, a memory

Polio once took a devastating toll, striking fear in parents of young children, who were its principal victims. How the crippling polio virus was identified, how it was spread, and how it was brought under control is explained by Jenny Meyer, MD, an assistant professor of neurology at Upstate. She also describes post-polio syndrome, a condition that can hit those who had polio in childhood many decades later and is treated in a clinic at Upstate. While polio has largely been eliminated from the world, it still does occur, and American children are still vaccinated against it.
