POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the general direction of, and reporting directly to, the Dean of the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Assistant Dean for Career & Professional Development is responsible for the development and management of career development programs and services for Morningside GSBS Students and Post-Doc Associates.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Organize and administer our novel, imbedded career and professional development curriculum, supporting the core competencies of career planning, scientific leadership, communication, and teamwork, with faculty-driven instruction and curricular development
  • Collaborate with faculty and GSBS leadership to dynamically evolve our career and professional development curriculum to adapt to emerging needs of the biomedical workforce in the Commonwealth and beyond
  • Collaborate with deans of Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and Student Affairs to establish new student success infrastructure and monitoring systems
  • Establish new curricular and extracurricular activities to enhance community knowledge and skill-building in the areas of scientific leadership, management, and advocacy
  • Imbed DEI, cultural competency and humility, and well-being into career and professional development curricular and extracurricular programming
  • Design and implement career development education addressing a wide range of STEM career pathways
  • Design and implement educational experiences addressing job-seeking and career advancement skills
  • Provide one-on-one career coaching to students and postdocs
  • Organize alumni contributions to professional networking and career education
  • Disseminate information about job and career advancement opportunities to trainees via a regular newsletter and web resources
  • Maintain the training grant and fellowship writing group established by GSBS Student Affairs
  • Direct the development and implementation of new and continuing scientific writing resources, including piloting new writing coaching resources
  • Support student organizations and interest groups focused on career exploration and skill-building
  • Collection and analyze data to assess impact and evaluate curricula and programming, with annual reporting to the GSBS Assembly and quarterly reporting to GSBS leadership
  • Manage an annual programming budget of $20,000
  • Supervise professional and administrative staff to support the depth and breadth of educational programming and one-on-one career coaching
  • Represent the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in regional and national organizations focused on graduate education and biomedical career development

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctoral degree required
  • 3-5 years of experience with biomedical career development at R1 institution required.
  • 7-10 years of teaching experience, including course development and delivery, at the postbaccalaureate and graduate level, in areas including biomedical sciences, career and professional development, science education
  • 3-5 years of experience with student affairs and/or career counseling
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience
  • Sustained commitment to DEI action and learning throughout 7-10 years of professional work experience
  • Excellence in writing, communication, and interpersonal organization
