TDOT Adopt-A-Highway groups help keep Tennessee beautiful! Since the program's inception in 1989, our volunteers have collected more than 12 million pounds of litter from Tennessee's roadsides. These valuable contributions are helping produce cleaner roadsides, reduce maintenance costs, and boost litter prevention awareness in the Volunteer State.

Tennessee's Adopt-A-Highway Program provides an opportunity for individuals and groups concerned about the environment to take an active role in preserving and protecting our state's natural beauty.

Groups are asked to make a commitment to adopt approximately two miles of roadway for at least one year and conduct a total of four litter clean ups on their adopted stretch of roadway. One pickup per season is recommended, although groups may conduct clean ups more frequently if desired.
Any group or individual over the age of 12 may apply for participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program. Volunteers 12-17 years old must have parental permission to participate in litter clean ups. TDOT requires adult supervision at a ratio of one adult for every five youths under the age of 18.
There is no fee required to participate in the program. TDOT provides volunteers with all necessary supplies and safety materials. Filled trash bags are removed from roadsides by TDOT crews.
Besides the sense of pride your group will have by knowing you are enhancing the appearance of your community, your group will have its name posted on a recognition panel installed below the official Adopt-A-Highway sign. To see an example of recognition panel options, click here.
Get Involved
Each group will need to designate a Group Coordinator as the main point of contact.
After you submit your volunteer application, please contact your District Coordinator. Your District Coordinator will assign your two-mile stretch of roadway and help prepare your group for litter cleanups.
Reporting
After every cleanup, help us track your accomplishments by submitting a Volunteer Activity Report. Click Report Your Clean Up to enter your information.
