Sexual Assault Kit Tracking Information

FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES

The TBI has chosen to use SAMSTrack to fulfill the requirements of TCA 38-6-128 and TCA 39-13-519, which was passed in 2021 by the Tennessee General Assembly. SAMSTrack is a web application that tracks sexual assault kits as they move through the criminal justice system. Every state/law enforcement official who processes sexual assault kits will be able to use SAMSTrack to record kit movements.

Every law enforcement agency has been encouraged to enroll in SAMSTrack by May 1, 2022 and SAMSTrack will be available for use on July 1, 2022.

To ensure your agency is properly registered and trained, please provide the following information:

  1. The contact person/s for hospitals and Sexual Assault Kit Collection Centers, to include names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
  2. The prosecutors your agency interacts with during the course of sexual assault investigations, including names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
  3. Your agency's administrator and back-up administrator. These individuals will be trained to use the system and can then provide training and access to individual users once the system goes live on July 1, 2022. Please include any relevant names, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Along with any questions, the above information can be sent to the SAMSTrack Support Team at SupportSAMSTrack@tn.gov.

Thank you for your assistance.

The TBI has implemented a system in compliance with TCA § 38-6-128 and TCA § 39-13-519, which created a statewide sexual assault kit (SAK) tracking system. The tracking system provides sexual assault survivors with the ability to anonymously track the location and status of their SAK from the point of collection through forensic analysis to final storage location and possible destruction.

Important Information

The tracking number associated with a SAK will be provided by the medical professional who conducts a forensic examination or law enforcement. The number should be retained, but should it become lost, survivors can contact their case's investigator, who will have access to this information.
