As Stuart Boomer of Cadence Magazine writes, “Massias has a command of the guitar that extends from the fingerboard to the amplifier, from the lightest acoustic play to R&B.” Join us for a unique form of musical expression drawn from a lifetime of varied experience and musical genres. This program is presented in partnership with the National Museum of American Jewish History.

Recipe

Simple simmered cod

From the artist:

This week, try making this easy cod recipe that we enjoy making when we go camping.

Ingredients

(Adjust the ingredient amounts to number of guests and personal preference)

  • Cod fillets, cut to individual portion size
  • Yukon gold potatoes, sliced about 1/4" thick
  • Sweet medallia onions (other red or white onions will work too), thinly sliced
  • Chopped fresh dill
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Splash of soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Place all the ingredients, except for the fish, into a large bowl and gently toss.
  2. Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a large saucepan.
  3. Place all the ingredients, except for the fish, into the saucepan. Place the fish fillets on top of them.
  4. Cover and cook at low heat until the potatoes are tender and the liquids have evaporated to leave a nice sauce. Remove the lid near the end of cooking if necessary to achieve the desired sauce consistency.
About the Performer
Elie Massias

Winner of a top ten Billboard Magazine choice award at the U.S. Northeast Independent World Music Series for his album Brooklyn Days, Elie Massias has shared the stage and recorded with many of today’s leading jazz and world music greats, including Ben Street, John Hebert, Henry Hey, Brian Blade, Chris Cheek, Jimmy Weinstein, Frank Colon, Debbie Deane, Reid Anderson, Dan Reiser, Larry Goldings, Gary Thomas, Jeff Ballard, and many more. Born in Gibraltar, a small British colony on the southernmost tip of Spain, Massias began studying guitar as a child and learned flamenco, classical, and other styles. By age eleven, he was studying with Gibraltar’s leading classical guitarist, William Gomez. Massias later studied at the renowned Jerusalem Academy of Music, before moving to the U.S. and graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Since moving to New York City in 1994, Massias has garnered critical acclaim as both a jazz and world music performer, and as a music producer and arranger.
