About two-thirds of Hillsborough County school district students get free breakfast and lunch at school every day when classes are in session.

District officials now have plans to make sure the children don’t go hungry after the official spring break week ends, just because campuses are not reopening as part of the response to the coronavirus.

Twenty-one schools across the county will serve bagged breakfasts and lunches from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, beginning March 23 and running through March 27. All children age 18 and younger are eligible to receive the meals, one per day.

No application is required.

Families are encourages to drive to the sites, but walkups also will be served. The district announced that the City of Tampa also plans to open some locations for feeding students. Those locations, not yet listed, will be available on the city’s website.

School districts are able to provide the subsidized meals outside their cafeterias as the result of a waiver from federal guidelines, obtained by the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. It’s the same arrangement that schools usually follow during the summer break.

The Pinellas County school district announced its sites earlier on Sunday. The Pasco County district plans to provide its list soon. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services also has a searchable website of approved meal sites statewide.
