We are committed to GHG Reduction:
- At farm level by developing and implementing programs to reduce and sequester carbon through regenerative agriculture and agroforestry practices and more traditional measures such as biodigesters/renewable energy interventions. Resulting carbon benefits can be used for insetting purposes or to generate carbon offsets both supporting the socio-economic benefits for farmers.
- At market level through the development of demand for climate neutral certified coffee.
- At supply chain level by promoting technical solutions such as renewable fuels, smarter packaging, and improved production methods.
Our ambition is a removal or sequestration of at least 1 million tons of CO2eq in coffee supply chains by 2025.
Update
June 2023
Our coffee clients have made substantial progress with C02 reductions in their supply chains. In addition, through compensating residual emissions they have contributed to following carbon projects:
- Cookstoves projects: in coffee producing countries and communities on order to the distribution and use of thousands of cookstoves.
- Forest conservation and afforestation projects
CNG has made good progress in developing an insetting standard in collaboration with clients and partners that will enable coffee roasters to account for significant GHG reductions and removals achieved within their value chain. We aim to launch a draft version of this standard in the second half of 2023.
Our product carbon footprint calculator that provides coffee roasters and other supply chain actors insights in all relevant GHG emissions in scope 1, 2 and 3 will become an on-line tool second half of 2023 and is independently verified by Preferred by Nature
