Biography

  • The Flaming Lips are an American rock band from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, U.S. The band formed in 1983 and are founders of the label Lovely Sorts of Death.

Rumour has it the band started when founder and guitarist Wayne Coyne stole a cache of musical instruments from a church hall and invited his vocalist brother Mark Coyne and Michael Ivins, the bassist, to start a band. Following a succession of drummers, Richard English was chosen as the band’s percussionist and who joined the band to record their self-titled album, released in 1985 on their very own label Lovely Sorts of Death.

Rarely has there been a band of such eclectic and esoteric appeal, a band’s whose proclivity for the surreal formed a sporadic pop career. The Flaming lips is often associated with psychedelic culture and many of the themes in the Flaming Lips’ earlier releases share this fascination for science fiction, space opera and the metaphysical world. A string of recordings on independent labels saw the band expand on their sound introducing tape loops and guitar and vocal effects. The band signed to Warner Bros. in 1990 after a representative of the label saw The Flaming Lips almost burn down a venue in Oklahoma, U.S. using pyrotechnics.

The album “Transmission from the Satellite Heart” released in 1993 was the first in which producer Dave Fridmann had not been involved. The album and in particular the song “She Don’t Use Jelly” saw the band have a more mainstream appeal and feature on a number of TV shows including Beverly Hills and Beavis and Butt-head, as well as long stints of touring, opening for the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

There biggest breakthrough however, came following the release of 1999’s “The Soft Bulletin”, which drew similarities between it and The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” due to its orchestral sounds and traditional catchy melodies.

By 2007 after releasing two more full-length albums the band had won three Grammy Awards, one for Best Engineered Album in 2007 for “A War With Mystics” and two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia) and “The Wizard Turns On…”. Since then the band has released a whopping 16 albums and have used their critical acclaim to collaborate with an impressive group of past and current musicians from Neon Indian, to Nick Cave and Erykah Badu. The Flaming Lips can seemingly do no wrong.

Live reviews

  • The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips are easily one of the most charismatic live performers on the circuit. A perfect booking for the main stage of Bestival, they drew thousands of revellers to the psychedelic live show. Some of those watching were devoted fans and others were people following the crowds on recommendation of other festival goers. As the large eye illuminates the back of the stage, the crowd cheers as Wayne Coyne leads his space rockers onto the stage.

Beginning with the spanning 'Look...The Sun Is Rising' the audience know they are instantly in for a spectacle. The gig is unpredictable and the pace twists and jerks under the command of Wayne and the crowd simply go with it. They clap, cheer and sing in all the right places and they are rewarded with explosions of glitter and streamers during 'Do You Realize??' which makes the audience roar so loud the whole of Robin Hill park looks toward the main stage.

The surrealist rock outfit thanks the audience between the pandemonium before the screeching guitar introductions of 'A Spoonful Weighs a Ton' begin and huge balls are launched onto the crowd. They lift their arms as one and bounce around in one blissful, euphoric mess.

  • The Flaming Lips is the greatest live act on the planet. My experience seeing them up close at First Avenue was like none other. This was my third time seeing them, but my first time getting up to the front row. Hands down the best show I've seen in my life--including 30+ shows at First Avenue. I can't even explain the incredible energy put out by The Flaming Lips and the energy from the sold out crowd at one of Rock and Roll's greatest venues.

I went by myself and by the time The Flaming Lips played "The W.A.N.D." I was hugging and high-fiving everyone around me. Confetti, glitter, fog, strobes, Wayne Coyne in his signature giant bubble... The only way to understand what goes on at a Lips show is to go experience it for yourself. Wayne announced during the show that they plan on doing at least two more shows at First Avenue before the year is over. I suggest buying your tickets as soon as they go on sale and experience this for yourself--I'm sure you'll find me on the front row giving out sweaty hugs with a huge smile and confetti plastered to my face.

  • My friend is a Flaming Lips fan, but I was not so impressed. We went to a music festival together and for the sake of staying together I went with them to see them play.

My first impression from the strange people and decorations was, "oh great one of "these" bands." But once the opening song "The Fear," played I felt it really pierced into me. The rhythm vibrating through the speakers touched me mentally and physically. I felt the hum in my heart and the beat in my mind.

I could feel the same from everyone around me and suddenly we were all swaying in harmony as Michael used his bass to lull us into a rhythmic trance. When the song was over they picked up into a faster song and it was like I felt the urge to dance. The whole show played nicely together one song into the next.

When we went home that night I had to tell my friend how much I was impressed with them live. In comparison to their recordings I felt they were a band that had to be experienced live. It was a memorable time.

  • Lame. This was my 4th Flaming Lips show in 11 years. Love the band and their music. Took them forever to start after their opener closed his set, and there wasn't much to set up as the openers worked around the Flaming Lips set design. So they didn't start playing till 9:40. Then there was long delays between each song because we got to hold on for the rainbow to inflate or the big bubble to inflate so Wayne can crowd surf, or Wayne is rambling about how we gotta be patient for the rainbow to inflate because the rainbow is so worth the wait. It's not. I came to rock and listen to good music. And don't get me started on the crowd. For the love of Jesus put your phone away! Who's going to watch your shitty recording of a concert they didn't attend? No one. Watch and experience the concert you just paid $70 to be at. Neutral Milk Hotel has the right idea, anyone taking pics or video will be asked to leave.

  • Flaming Lips has put on the most AMAZING concert I have ever been to!!! There is nothing like it! The singing is great live and the performance is a must to see before you die. I have NEVER seen anything like it before!!! I loved this concert, it made you feel overall happy and want to love everyone! Very trippy, hippie and fun. It felt as if they were throwing you a massive birthday party JUST FOR YOU!! I'm diffidently seeing them again, no doubt about it. Come back to Florida ANYTIME! I will be there in a heart beat.

  • I wasn't a huge fan of The Flaming Lips prior to going to the show, but I had heard probably 4-5 of their songs. I was really impressed with the show they put on with all of the visual and they sounded great live. I highly recommend going even if you are not a big fan as you will most likely want to hear more from there after the show. If I get a chance to go to another one of their shows in the future I will go.

If you are a fan Wayne and the lips the band do not disappoint with a brilliant selection of songs from their career, including Yoshimi of course! Visually and aurally spectacular. An instant hit of serotonin to the brain!

  • Amazing show. There's a lot more to these guys than is immediately apparent. True to their roots, they remain located in Oklahoma City. They support worthy causes in their communities... Not just a brilliant show, but wonderful people with a joyous vibe...

Don't miss the current tour. The new album "Oczy Mlody" is sublimely soulful and a delicious listen...

  • Amazing! I felt such euphoria just sitting in the audience. SOO MUCH PROPS to them for scoring the chance to preform with an orchestra, it was really worth it. You could never say anything bad about this band because they love all humans. Peace and love forever. The venue staff was amazing!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • It was one of the best nights of my life! I cried because the show was so beautiful. Their music sounded so wonderful and the crowd was so alive. Wayne even came into the crowd in a big clear bubble and the crowd carried him around. There was confetti and balloons everywhere, I loved it!
