As we now settle into the middle of the winter weather season, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is improving its process for informing the community when weather requires an operational status change and when a closure might justify a shift to virtual instruction. When it is determined that conditions are unsafe for students and staff, we have six operational status options, which will now be reported by easy-to-understand, color-coded messages. Read the full message here to learn more: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/publicinfo/community/school-year-2022-2023/Community-Message-20230113.html
In this weekly message you will find information about our our past Fentanyl community meeting, Yearbook Advertising, upcoming visits from higher education representatives in our College & Career Center, athletics schedules, and more.

Note from Clarksburg PTSA - January 29, 2023
“Words could paint pictures, I learned from him. Choosing the right word, and the right word order, he illustrated, could make an enormous difference in conveying an image or an idea”. –Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Dear Clarksburg High School Families:
We were fortunate to attend the Montgomery Goes Purple event, “A Family Forum on Fentanyl”, today at Clarksburg HS! Supported by MCPS, MCCPTA, Montgomery County leaders, DHHS Prevention and Harm Reduction, and various non-profits and community partners, the event brought in families from all over the county. The event was held as Fentanyl is, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration, “the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered”. Unfortunately, our communities here in Montgomery County are not immune. Fentanyl is here and impacting our youth. At the opening and close of the event, Mr. Owusu shared that one of the most important ways to fight this growing threat is communication.
· Please share any concerns with school leadership, a trusted individual, or our families.
· Please do not shy away from these challenging conversations. If you need assistance, please reach out.
· Please do not think it will not impact us therefore we can brush this off. Many families who lost loved ones to this crisis also thought the same: our loved ones will not be impacted.
The impact and reach of fentanyl transcends race, socioeconomic backgrounds, academic backgrounds, religious affiliations, and family histories. Our loved ones may not be using fentanyl directly but, the substances they may use may be laced with fentanyl.
How dangerous is fentanyl? Compared to other substances, it only takes roughly two milligrams of fentanyl to cause a fatal overdose.
Communication is vital to ensuring our communities, and especially our students, remain safe. Let us join hands to protect our loved ones and our community. Thank you to all who organized and led the event yesterday! We were so heartened to see the amazing turn-out! May we have more events that unite and uplift our communities.
As always, we are ONE Clarksburg.
Here are a few of our Notes for this week:

County Council expanded the support to all High Schools and added funding for a Positive Youth Development position at each school and additional PYD-SON staff to support each school (SON - Street Outreach Network).
The appropriation of these funds was approved in late May 2022
DHHS expanded the scope of the existing School and Community Youth Services (SCYS) contract to add these additional services and schools

DHHS expanded the scope of the existing Youth Opportunity Center contract with Identity for the Youth Development Specialist positions at 8 of the High Schools

C'BURG Attendance Policy
Academic success begins with excellent attendance. Therefore, special attention will be paid to the issue of attendance and punctuality. We expect every student to be in school every day except for the legitimate reasons defined by Maryland State law and listed below:
Death in the immediate family
Certified illness of the student
Court summons
Work or activity accepted by school authorities
Observance of religious holiday
Quarantine
Physical and mental incapacity
Violent storms
State emergency
As we prepare for the start of school, we wanted to share some important information and updates on attendance procedures. This year we will be providing an online option for reporting student absences. Parents and/or Caregivers of students will use a google form to report a student absence and submit attendances notes. Upon completion of this form, the attendance secretary will review each submission and will follow up to confirm absence. The form can be located here as well as on the Clarksburg High School Website under Attendance Procedures.
Please reference the following resources for our attendance policies:
- Clarksburg High School Attendance Policy: attendance policy
- Montgomery County Attendance Regulations can be found here: county regulations
This year we are focusing on Be Present 182, a charge to have all students in all classes on time every day.
If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Lindsay Cao, Assistant Principal or Ms. Elida Pineda, Attendance Secretary.
Registration for the Spring 2023 High School Athletics Season
Beginning January 23, 2023 parent/guardians can register their student-athletes for athletics using ParentVue. Below are some helpful resources to assist parents/guardians with the on-line registration process and with securing a physical evaluation prior to the first day of Spring season tryouts, March 1, 2023. Most of our teams have had competitive tryouts in years past (meaning cuts are made) so once tryouts are complete, coaches will not offer additional tryouts. If you want to be considered for a Spring team, you need to be at tryouts on Wednesday March 1, 2023. Once teams are selected, practices or contests will occur every day until the end of the season.
Do not wait until the last minute to register! There is only one Mr. Dalton who is reviewing and approving registrations in addition to all of his other responsibilities. If everyone waits until the last day or two to register, you may find yourself standing in a very long line outside Mr. Dalton's office while others are trying out for teams. Register BEFORE Saturday February 25 if you want to be sure you are able to participate on day 1. You can always register after that date, you just might miss the first day of tryouts.
Spring Sports are: Baseball (V & JV); Boys & Girls Lacrosse (V & JV); Softball (V & JV); Allied Softball (starts 3/13); Boys & Girls Tennis; Boys & Girls Track & Field and Boys & Coed Volleyball.

- Care for Kids - A health care program that provides access to health care services for uninsured children in Montgomery County.
- Clinics for Sports Physicals - an annual list released by MCPS Athletics, pricing is subject to change
Once you click the submit button you will receive a confirmation email. No confirmation email means you haven't registered your child!
ParentVue Troubleshooting Information
If a parent is having trouble logging into the MCPS ParentVue Portal:
- If you have never activated your parent account: Parents were sent activation information at the beginning of the school year, which included an Activation Key. If you still have this information, use it to activate your parent account. If you do not have the activation information, email Clarksburg ITSS Elvin_J_Crespo@mcpsmd.org. Be sure to include the student name, ID and parent name in the email.
- Forgot your password? Click on the Forgot Password link on the ParentVue Portal.
- Forgot the email address / username you used to activate your account? Email Clarksburg Athletic Director Edward_R_Dalton@mcpmd.org. Be sure to include the student name, ID and parent name in the email.
- Address issue preventing you from proceeding with Registration? You will need to email our Registrar Veidy_X_FuentesPacheco@mcpsmd.org to have her correct the issue.
Pre-Participation Physicals
Students should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the 'Medical Eligibility Form' (last page of SR-8) is ready for online submission (either a scan or a picture of the page) or for submission to the coach prior to tryouts/practices. This (or the Kaiser Permanente Physical Examination Certification Form) is the only page we can accept. Please do not upload or send anything other than the 'Medical Eligibility Form' (last page of SR-8).
Physicals for High School Athletics are valid for one calendar year. Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Clarksburg Athletic Director Edward_R_Dalton@mcpmd.org.
A frequent question is- can I try out for more than one Spring sport? The answer is no. The State of Maryland has set time limits on how long an athlete can practice each day. This precludes anyone from playing two sports at the same time.
Times & Locations of tryouts will be emailed (multiple times during the week leading up to March 1) to each registered student-athlete AND the parent/guardian who registered them starting around February 22.
If you have any general questions, feel free to email the Athletic Director at Edward_R_Dalton@mcpsmd.org or if you have sport specific questions please email the coach directly. A list of all coaches can be found on the front page of our website.
Operational Information 2022-2023
Guide to Rights and Responsibilities
In order to ensure a safe, productive, and positive learning environment, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) publishes two documents that help students, parents, and staff and understand school rules and regulations; the expectations for student conduct; and the possible consequences for violating the rules.
A Student’s Guide to Rights and Responsibilities is an overview of the rights and responsibilities students enjoy in MCPS and a summary of the laws and regulations that affect students.
The MCPS Student Code of Conduct provides an overview of discipline procedures and protocols and the range of consequences students could face for violating various policies, regulations, and rules. The guide also discusses the MCPS philosophy to discipline and defines the various disciplinary responses.
