March 2023
Superintendents Comments and Reports to the Board of Education
The March Board Meeting was overflowing with good news!
Varsity Basketball Achievements
- Girls Basketball Team defeated Massapequa High School at Hofstra University. As a result, they competed in and won the regional championship, also known as the Long Island Championships at Farmingdale State College against Walt Whitman High School.
-
Boys Basketball Team defeated Port Washington High School at Hofstra University and won the Nassau County title.
Track and Field Achievements
- Tyler Means earned All-State honors as a member of the intersectional relay at the 2023 New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships
- Sariah Doresca became New York Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) State Champion. She competed in the 55-meter race at the 2023 New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships. Her blazing time of 7.02 earned her a New York State and Federation Title.
-
Baldwin Bruins 4x 200 Track Team, which consists of Sariah Doresca, Breanne Barnett, Jahzara Emeli, and Jillian Rickford, won the New York Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) State Championships. Their rapid speed of 141.17 earned them a New York State and Federation Title.
This was a historic moment for Baldwin because these female student-athletes are the first lady bruins to win state and federation titles in their running competitions.
Other Exciting News
- Baldwin High School students, Matthew James Caraan, Samaya Lindo-Smellie and Solhaine Thera placed 3rd in the 11th annual Medical Marvels research competition, hosted by Northwell Health's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and the Workforce Readiness department. Read more about their innovative idea, which will help eliminate food waste within the district.
- The Education Academy received a silver Magna Award from the National School Boards Association (NSBA) for its innovativeness and dedication to equity in education. We were one of just three districts and the only New York school district to win in our category. This is a national competition and involves an extensive application process. We are featured in NSBA's spring publication and will be honored at an awards ceremony in April. Newsday will also highlight this accolade in an upcoming issue.
- Baldwin UFSD was proud to welcome astronaut and alumna, Jasmin Moghbeli, who visited students at Lenox and Baldwin High School and worked with them on some fun and interesting space-related STEM projects.
- Baldwin UFSD proudly hosted the AASA Future-Driven Learning Summit. This was significant for the district because it was the first time for a summit of this kind and stature to have ever occurred. Influential leaders from across the country in the areas of K-12, Higher Education, Industry and Policy— including Dr. James Lane from the U.S. Department of Education— convened for the first time together to discuss the future of public education. All four of these areas impact our school system and the world in which we teach, learn, and work. The majority of the summit took place in the high school's new Learning Collaboratory, in addition to tours of the elementary, middle and high schools. Everyone in attendance walked away thoroughly impressed by our students as well as by the teaching and learning taking place within our classrooms. Deans from colleges and universities and industry leaders who were present are ready to accept and hire our students based on what they heard and saw. A big thank you to students, teachers and staff for doing an amazing job! More to come on this initiative!
In honor of Women’s History Month, Board of Education President Susan Cools was presented with a citation from Legislator Debra Mulé, thanking her for her commitment to not only our schools, but also to the Baldwin community.
Legislator Debra Mulé also presented citations to the district's Best of Long Island 2023 winners:
- Baldwin Bruins Sports Podcast (Students: Aaron Bell, Joey Fullone, and Ava Reyer) for Best Podcast
- Ms. Stephanie Pina for Best School Counselor
- Mrs. Meghan Kargman for Best School Psychologist
- Mr. Tom Catapano for Best High School Sports Coach
