Happy New Year, Piney Grove 6th Grade Families!
We are off to a great start for 2022! We have welcomed back about 30 new Grizzlies this quarter, and the hallways are full of lots of smiles and laughter!
We are beginning a new chapter in communication here at the Grove. This new newsletter will provide you with some helpful and relevant information about what your child will be experiencing here at Piney.

ELA News
Throughout the month of January, 6th grade ELA students are completing Unit 4, Part 2. Students will apply their knowledge of argument (Unit 4, Part 1: Foundations of Argument) in their own argumentative writing piece. We will review the foundations, complete formative practice, and culminate the unit with a summative writing piece.
Here are the upcoming important dates:
- Tuesday, January 18: Write a claim formative in class
- Monday, January 24-Thursday, January 27: Unit 4, Part 2 Argument Summative Writing
- Monday, January 31: Begin Unit 5 reading the novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick for our Unit 5 study of Literary Elements, such as conflict, characterization, and POV. We do have copies in the PGMS Media Center for students to use and students will have an opportunity to check out a book if they would like to do so. If your student would like to purchase a copy to use in class, please go ahead and take steps to get that novel purchased.
Also, ALL ELA students will have the opportunity to participate in the Oratorical Contest this month.

- Thursday, 2/10: 6th Grade Oratorical Contest during Thrive Help Sessions. Sign up during forecasting to attend Two 6th grade winners will be selected to complete in the PGMS school wide contest on 2/17.
- Thursday, 2/17: School Wide Oratorical Contest during Thrive. One winner will be selected to move on to the County Oratorical Contest.
Math News
This month we will be exploring expressions and equations. We will have 3 formative quizzes and a two-part summative test on 2/9 or 2/10. Students will be working through a choice-based learning path curated with different levels (1-4) of practice and activities. Options for extra help include the itsLearning resource folder and Thrive sessions on Thursday.
Accelerated Math: This month, we are learning algebraic expressions. We will finish our Expressions Learning Pathway with a Summative test on January 28th, followed by a constructed response item test on Wednesday, Feb. 2 or Thursday February 3. Our next unit is on solving one- and two-step algebraic equations.
Science News
Science has been breaking down the Earth in Unit 5! We will finish up the Weathering, Erosion, Deposition and Soil with a Unit 5 summative test on Friday, Feb. 4. If your family takes a walk or a hike, ask your child to show you some weathering and erosion examples!
Science will begin the hydrology standards on Feb. 7 and our first unit will explore freshwater. The unit summative for freshwater is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 25.
Social Studies News
In January, 6th Grade Social Studies began the month by creating a Canadian Booklet which encompassed the information needed for the unit domains- Geography, Government, Economy, and History of Canada. The Canadian booklet will be taken up for a formative grade and used to help study for the end of unit Canada Quiz.
After the MLK Holiday and wrapping up Canada, we will begin our studies on Latin America. We start with map work to locate important places and features of the region before having our first summative over the map. We will then turn our attention to Latin America Geography which includes subjects such as Location, Climate, & Natural Resources, Environmental Issues, and Religions.

PE, Health, & Weight Training News
PE: P.E. students just finished a Team Handball Unit. We are beginning a Badminton Unit this week. Students will learn rules and practice different serves/grips.
Weight Training: Students will continue to get buff this week!
Fine Arts News
Band: Our students continue to work hard perfecting their performance pieces. We even have two students, one 7th grader and one 8th grader, who are participating in Honors Band on February 3rd & 4th. Additionally, we have one student who is advancing to the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Large Group Performance Evaluation. We are so proud of these Grizzlies!
CTAE News
Another note from Mrs. Jackson & Mrs. Lyons: The DECA State Competition will be held on January 28th.
Journalism: In Journalism, we are working on creating a Travel Brochure. Each student is picking a city around the world that they would like to visit or have already been to. They are researching different aspects such as historic sites and landmarks, recreation and outdoor activities, climate, and arts and culture. They are then compiling it all into a brochure to try and persuade someone to go there!
Engineering: Students are learning about CAD (computer assisted design) software. They will design and create 3D models related to Architecture.
