VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Dulles International Airport - 10th Annual Dulles 5K/10K!
Help the Dulles 5k/10k on the runway on Saturday, October 1st. Students who assist will receive certification of service hours from Special Olympics and each volunteer is given a race shirt as a token of our appreciation.
BAG DROP: Take the runners’ bags, label them with their bib number, sort them while the race is going on for easy retrieval at the end, and to keep an eye on them. Note: Shirt helpers and others need to move over to bag drop when the races start to help sort them. Bag drop opens at 6:30 a.m.
WATER BREAKS: Transportation to take volunteers out to the water breaks will run at 6:30 a.m. and again at 7:00 a.m., and they can meet the van across from the DJ’s stage. Safety vests are provided.
Only fill each cup about one-third to half full because the runners only need enough to splash in their mouth or face as they run by, before throwing the cup and continuing.
When handing out the waters, simply stand at the edge of the course, in front of the table and, using gloves provided, hold the rim between two fingers or keep the base in the palm of your hand, so that runners can easily grab the cups. Divvy up the pouring and handing out responsibilities. Pick up and dispose used cups in the receptacles provided.
When they return from the water breaks, please help the runners retrieve their bags over at Bag Drop.
FINISHER MEDALS: Hand out finisher medals as the runners cross the finish line. The 5k finisher will cross the finish line first and likely just a few minutes after the 10k runners start. Stand far enough back to give the runners room as they cross. Make sure spectators stay out of the finish line crossing area.
INTERESTED? Please email Carol Welti at: Carol@washingtonairports.com. She will give them further instructions.

Alfred Street Baptist Church HBCU
Alfred Street Baptist Church presents its 20th Annual Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) Festival, a hybrid event being held October 7-8, 2022. The festival is dedicated to connecting high school students and their families to HBCUs, and scholarship opportunities. Approximately 70 colleges and universities will be represented during the two-day event. Many will provide onsite admission decisions, conduct music auditions, and waive application fees. Additionally, seminars and exhibitor presentations will be held to help students navigate the college application process, seek financial aid opportunities and acclimate them to campus life.
Since 2003, this one-of-a-kind college fair has connected more than 50,000 students and parents to academic institutions. In 2020, over $5.4M in scholarships were awarded to the 1,766 high school seniors who were in attendance; many of whom were first generation college students.
HBCU Showcase | Tuesday October 18th, 6:30pm-9:00pm, Tuscarora HS, Leesburg, VA
Tuscarora HS will be hosting our 8th Annual Historically Black College and Universities Showcase. This evening is designed to expose our school community to the many options that are available at HBCUs. We want to expose and educate our school communities and encourage all students, regardless of ethnicity, to include these institutions during the college selection process. In addition to the HBCUs that will be in attendance, there will be a NCAA presentation, college test preparation, community scholarships, and on-site application review with college admissions counselors. We hope you make time to come out and get informed about these historic universities. We will be hosting this event “in-person” this year.

REVOLUTION PREP
Dear Heritage families,
With all the test-optional buzz in the industry, many parents have questioned whether their child should take and submit the SAT and/or ACT. What we've learned over the last two years is that students who submit good test scores are twice as likely to be admitted to selective colleges.
Studies have shown that taking a practice test is the best way for students to preview what’s ahead and to help inform their decisions about submitting a test score in their college application.
Our friends at Revolution Prep are offering practice SAT and ACT along with a SAT 101 Strategy Session:
