SCMS Weekly Newsletter (Website)
Week of December 21-December 25
Dear SCMS Parents/Guardians
This is Dr. Awkard with your weekly message. This week will be a short week for our students as we approach winter break. Our students have almost made it through the end of 2020 with strength and perseverance in what many of us would agree as a challenging year. I am truly proud of what our students have accomplished in such unprecedented circumstances.
I want to extend my thanks to our SCMS families for your continued partnership with us; your support is very appreciated and makes us stronger as a school community. On behalf of Silver Creek, we want to wish our families excellent health, great joy, much love and tremendous success in the coming year. Have a restful and safe holiday season and Happy New Year.
Let's make it a great week Huskies!

Student Course Registration and Articulation for the SY 21-22
Believe it or not it is that time to begin to think about next school year. Below is a timeline of dates as we start the articulation process for our students.
Current 6th and 7th Grade Students
- Upon our return from winter break, SCMS staff will be working to make course recommendations. These will be shared with students and sent home at the end of January.
- February 1st & 2nd--SCMS counselors will visit 6th and 7th grade science classes to share course offerings and explain the course registration process and timeline.
- February 8th--Deadline for completing and submitting Google Course Registration Form. Information on how to complete this registration form will be shared with students when counselors visit their science classes.
- Detailed information regarding course offerings and the course registration process and timeline will be shared with parents at the end of January. It will also be posted on the SCMS website upon our return from winter break.
Current 8th Grade Students (Rising 9th Grade Students)
- January 7th & 8th--B-CC counselors will visit 8th grade science classes to share information about High School graduation requirements, 9th grade course offerings, and the registration process and timeline. We will continue to update you with further course registration and articulation information including the 9th grade parent information night soon.
News from the SCMS Music Department
Congratulations to the following students who have been accepted to the MCPS Honors Groups:
- Elana Ernst (6th grade) MCPS Middle School Honors Chorus
- Cameron (William) Jones (7th grade) MCPS Junior Honors Band
- Margo Fioravanti (7th grade) MCPS Junior Honors Band
- Audrey Gee (8th grade) MCPS Junior Honors Band
- Ellie Vieira (8th grade) MCPS Junior Honors Band
The acceptance decision each year is very challenging. This year, between 150-200 students submitted auditions and, of those, only 60 were accepted for chorus and 75 we accepted for band.
Congratulations to our Huskies who have been accepted to these ensembles. We are so very proud of your hard work and perseverance. Also, a shout out to Ms. Mullarkey, SCMS music teacher, for her hard work and commitment to our students and the SCMS music program. Nice job!

Completion of the Culture of Respect Module & SSL Hours
Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms. An online student training lesson, entitled “Culture of Respect,” has been developed for students in grades 6 through 12.
The training should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and is accessible to all students via their myMCPS Classroom homepage. Students are asked to complete the training by January 29, 2021. If students have not completed the module, students will be provided an opportunity to complete this training during Husky Huddle on Tuesday, January 15, 2021.
Students will automatically receive SSL hours for completion of the Module. Students do not need to fill out SSL forms; the hours will automatically upload for the completion of the course at the end of the school year by MCPS. Students will be able to see these hours reflected on their final report card.
