As we now settle into the middle of the winter weather season, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is improving its process for informing the community when weather requires an operational status change and when a closure might justify a shift to virtual instruction. When it is determined that conditions are unsafe for students and staff, we have six operational status options, which will now be reported by easy-to-understand, color-coded messages. Note from Clarksburg PTSA - February 5, 2023
“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.” -- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Dear Clarksburg High School Families:
We cannot believe that one month of 2023 has already passed! As we continue on in the Spring semester and we prepare for our next tasks in our classes, work, and extracurricular activities, let us remember that all of these experiences are just one of the many stories that make up our lives. Sometimes, due to our busy schedules, we get so caught up in one of the pages or chapters of our life’s book and we let that define us. We may have also defined others by the snippets we hear of their stories. We are all more than the snippet of a story that is floating out there about us.
We are more than the numbers of a test or the results of a game.
We are more than the critique and the applause we receive.
We are more than the hats we wear for our current roles.
We are so much more than we give ourselves credit for.
Please remember that-let us all remember that.
High school is a challenging journey for all of us whether we are students, parents/guardians, or teachers/staff.
As always, we are ONE Clarksburg.
Here are a few of our Notes for this week:

CHS Celebrates our 10 School Counselors
CHS Celebrates our 10 School Counselors!!!
National School Counseling Week 2023, “School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 6–10, 2023, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century,”.
Counselors are ctively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”
More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week’s festivities. Clarksburg High School will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the countless benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.
Parents or community members with specific questions or concerns about school counseling programs should contact the school counselors at Clarksburg High School. More general information can also be found on ASCA’s website, www.schoolcounselor.org.

The County Executive’s proposed budget, released in March 2022, included funds for 1 Full time Mental Health Specialist and 1 Full time Care Manager at 10 priority High Schools (without Wellness Centers).
County Council expanded the support to all High Schools and added funding for a Positive Youth Development position at each school and additional PYD-SON staff to support each school (SON - Street Outreach Network).
The appropriation of these funds was approved in late May 2022
DHHS expanded the scope of the existing School and Community Youth Services (SCYS) contract to add these additional services and schools
SCYS contractors EveryMind, Sheppard Pratt, and YMCA-Youth & Family Services had already been providing therapy and mental health promotion and prevention services in some of the High Schools under the existing contract
Final approval for this expansion was received on August 4, 2022
HHS PYD expanded current Youth Opportunity Contracts (managed by Identity) to expand PYD services in the following schools:
BCC, Clarksburg, Einstein, Magruder, Springbrook, Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery, and Rockville
All Identity PYD staff are hired for each school (Youth Development Specialist)
DHHS expanded the scope of the existing Youth Opportunity Center contract with Identity for the Youth Development Specialist positions at 8 of the High Schools
SON continues to provide Crisis Intervention services at request of MCPS in the aftermath of acts of violence either in the community or the school community.
All of SON services will utilize the shared PYD space at every school it currently provides services as well at the upcoming school sites once new staff are hired.
HHS PYD staff will provide ongoing inservice training to all PYD Providers to include the following: Joven Noble Curriculum in December, HHS PYD a youth engagement training, and Professional Community Intervention Training Institute.

C'BURG Attendance Policy
Academic success begins with excellent attendance. Therefore, special attention will be paid to the issue of attendance and punctuality. We expect every student to be in school every day except for the legitimate reasons defined by Maryland State law and listed below:
Death in the immediate family
Certified illness of the student
Court summons
Work or activity accepted by school authorities
Observance of religious holiday
Quarantine
Physical and mental incapacity
Violent storms
State emergency
As we prepare for the start of school, we wanted to share some important information and updates on attendance procedures. This year we will be providing an online option for reporting student absences. Parents and/or Caregivers of students will use a google form to report a student absence and submit attendances notes. Upon completion of this form, the attendance secretary will review each submission and will follow up to confirm absence. The form can be located here as well as on the Clarksburg High School Website under Attendance Procedures.
Please reference the following resources for our attendance policies:
- Clarksburg High School Attendance Policy: attendance policy
- Montgomery County Attendance Regulations can be found here: county regulations
This year we are focusing on Be Present 182, a charge to have all students in all classes on time every day.
If you have any questions please reach out to Ms. Lindsay Cao, Assistant Principal or Ms. Elida Pineda, Attendance Secretary.
Registration for the Spring 2023 High School Athletics Season
Beginning January 23, 2023 parent/guardians can register their student-athletes for athletics using ParentVue. Below are some helpful resources to assist parents/guardians with the on-line registration process and with securing a physical evaluation prior to the first day of Spring season tryouts, March 1, 2023. Most of our teams have had competitive tryouts in years past (meaning cuts are made) so once tryouts are complete, coaches will not offer additional tryouts. If you want to be considered for a Spring team, you need to be at tryouts on Wednesday March 1, 2023. Once teams are selected, practices or contests will occur every day until the end of the season.
Do not wait until the last minute to register! There is only one Mr. Dalton who is reviewing and approving registrations in addition to all of his other responsibilities. If everyone waits until the last day or two to register, you may find yourself standing in a very long line outside Mr. Dalton's office while others are trying out for teams. Register BEFORE Saturday February 25 if you want to be sure you are able to participate on day 1. You can always register after that date, you just might miss the first day of tryouts.
Spring Sports are: Baseball (V & JV); Boys & Girls Lacrosse (V & JV); Softball (V & JV); Allied Softball (starts 3/13); Boys & Girls Tennis; Boys & Girls Track & Field and Boys & Coed Volleyball.
- ParentVue Guide - A "Quick Guide to ParentVue for Athletics" in English for parents/guardians when registering their students for athletics.
- ParentVue Guide - A "Quick Guide to ParentVue for Athletics" in Spanish for parents/guardians when registering their students for athletics.

- Care for Kids - A health care program that provides access to health care services for uninsured children in Montgomery County.
- Clinics for Sports Physicals - an annual list released by MCPS Athletics, pricing is subject to change
Once you click the submit button you will receive a confirmation email. No confirmation email means you haven't registered your child!
ParentVue Troubleshooting Information
If a parent is having trouble logging into the MCPS ParentVue Portal:
- If you have never activated your parent account: Parents were sent activation information at the beginning of the school year, which included an Activation Key. If you still have this information, use it to activate your parent account. If you do not have the activation information, email Clarksburg ITSS Elvin_J_Crespo@mcpsmd.org. Be sure to include the student name, ID and parent name in the email.
- Forgot your password? Click on the Forgot Password link on the ParentVue Portal.
- Forgot the email address / username you used to activate your account? Email Clarksburg Athletic Director Edward_R_Dalton@mcpmd.org. Be sure to include the student name, ID and parent name in the email.
- Address issue preventing you from proceeding with Registration? You will need to email our Registrar Veidy_X_FuentesPacheco@mcpsmd.org to have her correct the issue.
Pre-Participation Physicals
Students should complete their pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) so that the 'Medical Eligibility Form' (last page of SR-8) is ready for online submission (either a scan or a picture of the page) or for submission to the coach prior to tryouts/practices. This (or the Kaiser Permanente Physical Examination Certification Form) is the only page we can accept. Please do not upload or send anything other than the 'Medical Eligibility Form' (last page of SR-8).
Physicals for High School Athletics are valid for one calendar year. Physicals can be uploaded by the parent during the registration process. However, if a parent needs to submit a physical after the student has already been registered, email an electronic copy of the pre-participation physical (MCPS Form SR-8) to Clarksburg Athletic Director Edward_R_Dalton@mcpmd.org.
A frequent question is- can I try out for more than one Spring sport? The answer is no. The State of Maryland has set time limits on how long an athlete can practice each day. This precludes anyone from playing two sports at the same time.
Times & Locations of tryouts will be emailed (multiple times during the week leading up to March 1) to each registered student-athlete AND the parent/guardian who registered them starting around February 22.
If you have any general questions, feel free to email the Athletic Director at Edward_R_Dalton@mcpsmd.org or if you have sport specific questions please email the coach directly. A list of all coaches can be found on the front page of our website.

Guide to Rights and Responsibilities
In order to ensure a safe, productive, and positive learning environment, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) publishes two documents that help students, parents, and staff and understand school rules and regulations; the expectations for student conduct; and the possible consequences for violating the rules.
A Student’s Guide to Rights and Responsibilities is an overview of the rights and responsibilities students enjoy in MCPS and a summary of the laws and regulations that affect students.
The MCPS Student Code of Conduct provides an overview of discipline procedures and protocols and the range of consequences students could face for violating various policies, regulations, and rules. The guide also discusses the MCPS philosophy to discipline and defines the various disciplinary responses.
