Eagles' News from the Lake
Week 28 April 2024
Principal's Message
Dear, Lakewood Community-
I hope you enjoyed the sunshine and beautiful weekend weather! Take Your Child to Work Day was a huge success. Over 120 families stated they would be taking their child(ren) to work with them, and 15 Lakewood staff members brought their child(ren) and/or sibling(s) to work. It was a great opportunity for the children to see what their adults do at work each day to continue making Lakewood a great place to be and to work. We, also, heard from many children about their time with you at your workplace through their writings and drawing and sharings. It was a successful day.
I want to thank our very own Deepa-PTA STEAM Coordinator for another terrific Annual Lakewood STEAM Night this past Friday! Our young scientists did not disappoint. The projects were so creative and engaging. Kudos to our young Lakewood scientists and YOU the adults who supported them with your time and effort. Thank you.
As always, let's embrace every moment, every opportunity, and every connection that comes our way. Let's have another great week, Lakewood ES - we are One Band One Sound!
This week's newsletter is filled with just a few updates and important reminders, here we go!
Staff Appreciation Week:
In 2024, we celebrate Teachers and Staff Appreciation Week from 6 May to 10 May. It is a time for scholars, parents, administrators, and communities to come together and express their appreciation for our educators' and staffs’ dedication and hard work. We ask that you send a note, card, email or gesture of appreciation to our hardworking staff if you are able. We will be celebrating our fabulous teachers and staff this year in a variety of ways. We thank the generous gifts PTA has planned for teachers and staff as well. More details to follow.
Safety and Security:
Thank you for the emails and check-in during arrival and dismissal. I enjoy speaking with families, and keeping you informed as best I can. The safety and well-being of our scholars, staff, and families are our top priorities, and we take any concerns about the security of our school seriously. Our school remains a safe and secure environment for all. We will continue with the many community engagement activities planned for the remainder of the school year. Please know we continue to be vigilant in adhering to safety precautions. We have shared safety reminders to staff, reassessed and enhanced safety protocols, and will receive more presence from our safety and security supports. As always, we remain committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all of our scholars and Lakewood community.
Kindergarten Registration:
Do you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024? Do you know a community member who does? Let them know that Kindergarten registration has begun for next school year. It is incredibly important that you register your child ASAP so that MCPS can allot the correct staffing to Lakewood Elementary so children can begin the year with correct class sizes and number of teachers.
Please see the MCPS Kindergarten registration website for more information on what documents are needed and how to register.
We can't wait to welcome our newest Eagles to the Lakewood family!
Warm regards,
Dr. Kelly

Planet Aid
Please donate your gently used clothing and shoes. You will see the yellow bin near our entrance to the parking lot. This is a positive way to contribute to the environment and community. Partnering with Planet Aid makes it all so easy! Lakewood earns 10 cents per pound and will use this money for scholars and staff. Planet Aid accepts clothing, shoes, and other textiles (for example, bedding, towels, and curtains). This means that there is no need to separate items based on their condition. Even items that are stained, torn, or frayed can be recycled, so drop off your worn-out items, too! The only articles of clothing we cannot accept are those that are dirty, wet, or moldy.Thank you in advance.
