Eagles' News from the Lake
Week 7 April 2024
Principal's Message
Dear, Lakewood Community-
I hope this message finds you well, and that you’ve had an opportunity to enjoy this beautiful spring day. It was a welcomed treat from all the rain we had last week. I would like to thank our four parent community members who attended our Spring Community Walk Through last week on 3 April 2024. It was a great opportunity for the community members to observe the positive school climate, and our scholars and staff as they engage in great teaching and learning. Community members had an opportunity to ask questions and debrief with members of leadership following the classroom visits. We hope to see more families represented at our next Community Walk Through in the fall.
Last week we recognized our amazing assistant principal, Mrs. Levy, our 17 professional support staff (paraeducators), and media specialist, Mrs. McCaffrey with notes, cards, treats, announcement shout-outs, and gifts. These members of our learning community help to make Lakewood such a special place. We thank them for their unwavering commitment to our scholars, each other and community.
This week's newsletter is filled with updates and important reminders, so here goes:

Solar Eclipse-TOMORROW:
🌞🌑 On Monday, 8 April 2024, Montgomery County, MD, will witness a rare partial solar eclipse beginning around 2:04 p.m., with maximum coverage at approximately 3:20 p.m., right at our dismissal time. Please click HERE for MCPS information and recommendations. Here’s how Lakewood ES will celebrate this genuinely unique astronomical event! 🌑🌞
The solar eclipse glasses arrived and will be distributed to all scholars. A HUGE SHOUT-OUT TO OUR PTA FOR PURCHASING THE SOLAR ECLIPSE GLASSES FOR OUR SCHOLARS! While we will not have a school-wide viewing of the eclipse, scholars will put on the protective eyewear as they leave school for the day as dismissal will proceed as usual.
Out of an abundance of caution, we will have indoor recess on Monday, 8 April 2024.
If there are dismissal changes, please communicate them directly with your classroom teachers and copy Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Brown on messages so we can prepare in the main office for signing students out.

Reading Night:
Please join our community for our annual Reading Night on Thursday, 18 April 2024. We will begin in the cafeteria for an introduction and some fun reading activities. Then, we will have read-alouds from our Masked Readers! Scholars will get a chance to enjoy multiple mystery readers (Lakewood Staff). We will end the night with raffle winners and a cozy treat for all! We hope to see you there! Please indicate your anticipated attendance using the Family Sign Up Link so we know how many scholars are attending Reading Night and can plan accordingly.
Autism Awareness and Deaf History Months:
April marks Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and our school is committed to celebrating the unique strengths and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. Lakewood Elementary is committed to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion. Our purpose is clear: to create a world where autistic people are embraced, celebrated and recognized for their unique contributions and have the opportunities they need to reach their full potential. United we stand, stronger in numbers. Be fearless and stand with us and Autism Speaks alongside the autism community. Pledge now to #ActFearlessly.
April also marks Deaf History Month! 🤟 This is a time to honor and recognize the contributions, achievements, and rich cultural heritage of the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Stay tuned for special activities and events throughout April to celebrate and raise awareness for Deaf History Month at Lakewood Elementary. Let's come together to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the diversity within our community.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me or our dedicated staff members. Your feedback is invaluable as we work together to ensure the success and well-being of our scholars, staff and community.
Warm regards,
Dr. Kelly

Planet Aid
Please donate your gently used clothing and shoes. You will see the yellow bin near our entrance to the parking lot. This is a positive way to contribute to the environment and community. Partnering with Planet Aid makes it all so easy! Lakewood earns 10 cents per pound and will use this money for scholars and staff. Planet Aid accepts clothing, shoes, and other textiles (for example, bedding, towels, and curtains). This means that there is no need to separate items based on their condition. Even items that are stained, torn, or frayed can be recycled, so drop off your worn-out items, too! The only articles of clothing we cannot accept are those that are dirty, wet, or moldy.Thank you in advance.
