Eagles' News from the Lake
Week 21 April 2024
Principal's Message
Dear, Lakewood Community-
I hope you enjoyed the sunshine and Saturday's beautiful weekend weather! It was a perfect evening for baseball. I want to give a special shoutout to our reading specialist, Carolyn Skrodzki, who organized the Reading program in partnership with the Bowie Baysox. I know many families had the opportunity to attend the game and enjoy. Thank you to all the families who attended our annual Mystery Reading Night, and thank you to all the Lakewood staff Mystery Readers. We had a wonderful time reading with over 75 families.
As we prepare for an exciting week, please be mindful of pedestrian safety. As always, let's embrace every moment, every opportunity, and every connection that comes our way. Let's have another great week, Lakewood ES - we are One Band One Sound!
This week's newsletter is filled with updates and important reminders, here we go!
Safety and Security:
The safety and well-being of our scholars, staff, and families are our top priorities, and we take any concerns about the security of our school seriously. Our school remains a safe and secure environment for all. We will continue with the many community engagement activities planned for the remainder of the school year. We are excited to participate in these community engagement opportunities. Please know we continue to be vigilant in adhering to safety precautions, and protocols. We have shared safety reminders to staff, reassessed and enhanced safety protocols, and will receive more presence from our safety and security supports. As always, we remain committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all of our scholars and Lakewood community.
Quarter 3 Survey Data:
After deep consideration of everyone's feedback on survey fatigue, Lakewood has decided to forgo the third quarter survey. Thank you for your continued support with completing the Maryland State Survey and the MCPS climate Survey. We will be conducting some focus groups in the coming weeks to gather data and we will send out the quarter 4 survey the second week in June. Please stay tuned for more information.
Asynchronous Learning:
April 22nd will be an at-home, asynchronous learning day to make up for one of our emergency weather days. Scholars will engage with academic materials at a time that works best for them and your family. There will be no live instruction during this time. We will be providing both tech-free and technology-based options. Scholars and families can use any of the materials you have access to or that work best for you. Please review the options for tasks you can work on during this day of asynchronous learning.
Thank you for your continued support. Here is a link to the Lakewood choice board. Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions. Every scholar will receive a packet or a paper copy of the choice board. Parents will need to complete the bottom portion of the paper choice board and return it back to their homeroom teacher for attendance purposes by April 23rd.
Take Your Child To Work Day:
Greetings Lakewood Community! Please fill out this form if you are taking your child(ren) out of school on Thursday, April 25th. Please fill out a separate form for each child if you have more than one child you are taking to work. You do not need to fill out this form if your child(ren) is/are attending school on April 25th. Also, we want to hear all about your child's time with you so please have your child write or draw about their day with you and have them bring in their writing on Friday.
BetterPlanet4Kids: Earth Day Event (See photos below)
To celebrate Earth Day, BP4K volunteers cleaned up Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park (12121 Skylark Rd, Clarksburg, MD 20871) on Saturday, April 20th! from 2 pm - 4 pm. Volunteers received SSL hours! BetterPlanet4Kids Sponsors invited County council members. We are so very proud of our very own Pranika, grade five scholar and her brother, Raj-grade 8 scholar .
Kindergarten Registration:
Do you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before 1 September 2024? Do you know a community member who does? Let them know that Kindergarten registration has begun for next school year. It is incredibly important that you register your child ASAP so that MCPS can allot the correct staffing to Lakewood Elementary so children can begin the year with correct class sizes and number of teachers.
Please see the MCPS Kindergarten registration website for more information on what documents are needed and how to register.
We can't wait to welcome our newest Eagles to the Lakewood family!
Health Room Updates:
Here are the new updated Policies and Procedures for Head Lice and Calamine Lotion from Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services School Health Services
Pediculosis (Head Lice)- Please click here to read about the updated MCPS Head Lice policy and procedures.
The SHS management team evaluated the use of Calamine in partnership with Dr. Kisha Davis, the County medical officer and Dr. Kapunan in the office of the School System Medical Officer at MCPS. At this time, health room staff are to stop using Calamine lotion unless the student has a specific order from a health care provider and the family has provided a new unopened bottle from the pharmacy. We have been asked to discard open bottles. Alternates for students with itchy bug bites are washing with soap and water and a cold compress.
Autism Awareness and Deaf History Months:
April marks Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, and our school is committed to celebrating the unique strengths and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum. Lakewood Elementary is committed to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion. Our purpose is clear: to create a world where autistic people are embraced, celebrated and recognized for their unique contributions and have the opportunities they need to reach their full potential. United we stand, stronger in numbers. Be fearless and stand with us and Autism Speaks alongside the autism community. Pledge now to #ActFearlessly. April also marks Deaf History Month! 🤟 This is a time to honor and recognize the contributions, achievements, and rich cultural heritage of the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Stay tuned for special activities and events throughout April to celebrate and raise awareness for Deaf History Month at Lakewood Elementary. Let's come together to learn, appreciate, and celebrate the diversity within our community.
PTA STEAM Science Fair:
Friday April 26th, 2024 – 6pm to 8pm, Lakewood Gymnasium
You are invited to participate in our annual Lakewood STEAM Night! The fair includes topics
related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and is a great way to get
scholars (and parent volunteers) excited about the scientific process and thinking like young
scientists and artists. This science and arts fair is non-competitive and encourages each child to
participate, learn and have fun! All students are invited to design a science fair project that uses the scientific method or the engineering process diagram to solve a problem or an arts project to
showcase their talent. Scholars may work on a project individually, with a small group, or with their family. Please email lakewoodsciencefair@gmail.com if you have questions.
Please click here for more information and see the Flyer below. We hope to see you there.
Warm regards,
Dr. Kelly

Planet Aid
Please donate your gently used clothing and shoes. You will see the yellow bin near our entrance to the parking lot. This is a positive way to contribute to the environment and community. Partnering with Planet Aid makes it all so easy! Lakewood earns 10 cents per pound and will use this money for scholars and staff. Planet Aid accepts clothing, shoes, and other textiles (for example, bedding, towels, and curtains). This means that there is no need to separate items based on their condition. Even items that are stained, torn, or frayed can be recycled, so drop off your worn-out items, too! The only articles of clothing we cannot accept are those that are dirty, wet, or moldy.Thank you in advance.
