NEW: Parent Survey Deadline Extended to Dec. 7
Parent Survey Deadline Extended to Dec. 7
As MCPS prepares for the return of students, it is critical for parents to complete the preference survey indicating whether their child(ren) will remain exclusively in a virtual learning environment, or participate in a combination of in-person and virtual instruction during the second semester. The deadline to submit the survey has been extended to Monday, Dec. 7. Both options would allow students to take part in in-person athletics and extracurricular activities. Parents who select the in-person experience will be able to switch to virtual at any time. The survey also asks parents to indicate if their child needs MCPS-provided transportation.
NEW: Counselor LIVE Chat

NEW: This Week's Notes from the College & Career Center
Attention Students of all Grades!!
If you think you may qualify for Free/Reduced Meals, please apply. FARMS status can qualify you for College Application Fee and/or testing waivers.
College Applications - Seniors
If applicable, please keep working on your College Application Packet. Everything you need to do for submitting college applications, including instructions, is on this document.
If you plan on applying or have applied to Montgomery College, please also add MC to your list of schools in Naviance. This helps me and counselors keep track of where students are applying in case they need assistance. Thank you!
COLLEGE APPLICATION FEE WAIVERS! - Seniors
See the link below for fee waiver codes for a few Maryland Colleges or Universities (and 1 Virginia University). These codes can be used regardless of FARMS status. Some deadlines may have passed, but others are still active.
- 2020 VIRTUAL MARYLAND COLLEGE APPLICATION CAMPAIGN (VMCAC) - Waivers*
- Morgan State University has extended the deadline to use their code FREE20 to December 31, 2020.
College Testing - Juniors & Seniors
Important Note from MCPS about Testing: MCPS is moving forward with the December 5 SAT and December 12 ACT administration at selected high school test centers. However, based on changing health and safety guidelines and prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff, capacity will be reduced at each test center. Unfortunately, this may result in some students being unregistered for the December 5 SAT by College Board or for the December 12 test by ACT. When unregistering students, these organizations use their own processes for determining which students are cancelled, which is typically based on prioritizing seniors. College Board or ACT will contact students directly via email if there is a change to their registration status, as this is not managed by MCPS. MCPS will keep you updated on future testing opportunities in early 2021.
If you are registered for either of these tests, please be aware that some students may be dropped from the test. According to sources they will drop Juniors first. Please frequently check your email as a result.
Naviance - All Grades
Please make sure you can log into your Naviance account. Many students are starting Naviance lessons or will be soon. There are two methods to login: using a password and Single Sign On.
We are encouraging students to use the Single Sign-On* (click here to see how) as you do not need to enter your password to login. You need to be logged into your MCPS Google Account for this to work and for you to access the icon on your Google waffle. You may also sign into your account via the Naviance Link. If you have forgotten your password, you should be able to reset using your MCPS ID number or MCPS Google email.
If you are having issues logging in, please reach out to Mr. Nalda.
*Please note: Single Sign-On is only available to students at this time.

NEW: SVHS Cybersecurity Club - Join Now!
NEW: IB Spotlight
This month we are focused on the ATL category COMMUNICATION, which is also the MYP cluster. Our Learner Profile attribute is OPEN-MINDED..
COMMUNICATION is an essential experience in our lives. Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of ideas, feelings, intentions, attitudes, expectations, perceptions, or commands, as by speech, non-verbal gestures, and writings. It is by communicating with others how people learn about our ideas and how we figure out what others think. Without communication no meaning is exchanged, no ideas are shared, and new ideas will remain unrevealed. Communication is especially important today in our society.
We need to develop strong communication skills to express ourselves with clarity, to ask strong questions and provoke big ideas. Through effective communication we will be part of the creation of concepts that might influence others and might become a turning point in a particular time, and it is for this reason that we need to be active listeners as well, for many times the opportunities for communicating and exchanging ideas will be around us, and we need to take advantage.
To be successful in this time when information inundates us, we need to be able to communicate ideas effectively. Students need to develop this vital skill, as it provides opportunities to learn more, to influence others positively , and to be part of change.
As OPEN-MINDED individuals, we “understand and appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of other individuals and communities. We are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.”
IB students have a deep understanding of various cultures and views, bringing an appreciation of new views to both their academic study and their involvement in local and wider communities. The international mindedness compliments the missions of the best colleges, trade schools, and universities.
Students are especially open-minded during registration when they consider all their course options and can complement this with being a risk-taker and challenging themselves to take rigorous courses.
Students are effective COMMUNICATORS when they OPEN-MINDED to look at different perspectives. Other people’s views might be different to your own. OPEN-MINDED COMMUNICATORS actively listen to the perspectives of others and allow people the chance to convince you of their ideas or points of view.
Please don’t forget to complete the IB Student of the Month Survey to recognize an IB Student (full IB Diploma Career-related, or Certificate) for doing a great job or showing improvement with ATL skills or the LP in your classroom. Each month student(s) will be recognized in the last week of the month in Dr. Cohen's Smore newsletter.
STAFF SHOUTOUT for being open-minded and actively engaged in school wide MYP training as a BIG first step in implementing MYP in our Wall to Wall IB School. And a special SHOUT-OUT to Kim Becraft, the MYP Coordinator who took the lead on this training and did an amazing job organizing and effectively communicating with all throughout it.
Are you a rising junior interested in the FULL IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM or the CAREER_RELATED PROGRAM - please contact Natasha Ezerski (IB DP/CP Coordinator). And as always, Kim Becraft, (MYP Coordinator) is available to answer questions.
REPEAT: Principal Intern Takeover - December 14 to January 28
Dear Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff:
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with additional information regarding Mr. Scott Smith, our principal intern at Seneca Valley High School. As I informed you at the beginning of the year, we are very pleased to have the opportunity to develop a future MCPS principal. Mr. Smith has adjusted very well to our school and has provided incredible support to our students and staff. Over the last few months, we have been working side by side co-leading activities and ensuring that our students receive a quality education every day.
I am very confident in Mr. Smith's ability to lead our school during the practicum. This practicum allows the principal intern an opportunity to serve in the principal role from December 14, 2020 to January 28, 2021. In order to make this experience more authentic and beneficial, I ask that parents, students and staff direct all school-related communications to Mr. Smith during that time frame.
In this virtual school setting, I will be preparing and planning for our student’s potential return to the school building. During the intern practicum, I will also support the principal intern not only during times of reflection, but also when the principal intern may need a sounding board to address a specific situation in the school. As a principal developer, I am committed to ensuring Mr. Smith an opportunity to develop into a highly effective school leader.
As always, I thank you for the trust you place in us to educate your children. While I will miss our interactions, I also believe that we all have to work together to continue to develop highly effective aspiring principals in Montgomery County Public Schools.
Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
Respectfully,
Marc J. Cohen, Principal
REPEAT: Culture of Respect Lessons
Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms. An online student training lesson, entitled "Culture of Respect," has been developed for students in grades 6 through 12. This online training lesson provides critical information that will help students better recognize the signs of inappropriate behaviors, including the various ways to report alleged/concerning incidents. The training includes a student survey that will provide school leaders with valuable data to assess the current culture and climate of respect at their schools and determine potential next steps to plan for improvements. Students will earn two SSL hours to complete the training.
The objectives of the training module are for students to know and be able to:
• Review collective responsibilities in promoting a positive school culture and ensuring the physical, social, and emotional safety for all students in alignment with the MCPS Be Well 365 initiative. Define bullying, cyberbullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias, hazing,
intimidation, and student gender norms.
• Recognize signs of hazing, bullying, and harassment, including sexual harassment/assault.
Identify reporting procedures to inform school administration of potential concerns and incidents.
• Analyze different scenarios and discuss possible consequences per the MCPS Student Code of Conduct Complete a feedback questionnaire, including an activity to help school administration gauge the level of concern in each of the areas addressed in the training module.
The Culture of Respect training will be completed through fifth period Advisory on December 11th or December 15th, 2020. Students may see the survey in their Canvas classroom before then, but do not need to do anything until their designated day in Advisory.
If you have any questions about the topics that will be covered, please contact me, or Elizabeth Maxey at elizabeth_maxey@mcpsmd.org.
If you have any questions or concerns about the topics that will be covered, please contact your student's administrator or counselor.
