We are very excited that the Division of Food and Nutrition Services will be distributing meals for 4 days on Wednesday, Dec. 23rd for the long weekend at our usual times – 11:00 – 1:00 pm at all current meal sites (including buses).
On Tuesday, December 29th , we will be distributing 5 day breakfast and lunch meal kits plus a breakfast for Monday, January 4th to youth.
In order to plan for these additional food distributions, families are being asked to complete the google form linked below, in English and Spanish. It is how meals are being preordered.
NEW: PSAT Administration January 26
Dear Class of 2022 Students and Parents,
This is to inform you of the opportunity, as health and safety conditions allow, to take the PSAT on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. This test is usually offered in October but due to COVID-19, College Board is providing high schools across the country with another opportunity to administer the test on this date. Please note that this administration will have the same benefits as the October PSAT/NMSQT, including eligibility for programs administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. To learn more about the benefits of taking the PSAT, please click here.
Based on College Board guidance and group size protocols, this PSAT administration will be offered to interested Grade 11 students only. The PSAT 10 (PSAT for Grade 10 students) will have testing windows available later in Spring 2021 and will not be part of the January administration. There will be a $17 testing fee for the assessment. To support students during this challenging time, students who qualify for fee waivers can indicate this on the registration form.
Please note that not all Grade 11 students are required to take the PSAT. It is only being offered if you are interested. We are also planning to offer the SAT School Day in spring 2021 for Grade 11 students. For the PSAT, interested Grade 11 students, students seeking SAT practice and official score reporting, and students interested in National Merit are encouraged to register.
If you are interested in taking the PSAT, please fill out the Registration Google Form here. This form is just to gather information so we can determine approximately how many students would like to take the PSAT. We would like for you to complete and submit the registration form by December 21st. Once you complete the form (if interested in testing), we will reach out at a later date with updated information.
If you have any questions, please contact

REPEAT: IB Spotlight
This month we are focused on the ATL category COMMUNICATION, which is also the MYP cluster. Our Learner Profile attribute is OPEN-MINDED..
COMMUNICATION is an essential experience in our lives. Communication is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of ideas, feelings, intentions, attitudes, expectations, perceptions, or commands, as by speech, non-verbal gestures, and writings. It is by communicating with others how people learn about our ideas and how we figure out what others think. Without communication no meaning is exchanged, no ideas are shared, and new ideas will remain unrevealed. Communication is especially important today in our society.
We need to develop strong communication skills to express ourselves with clarity, to ask strong questions and provoke big ideas. Through effective communication we will be part of the creation of concepts that might influence others and might become a turning point in a particular time, and it is for this reason that we need to be active listeners as well, for many times the opportunities for communicating and exchanging ideas will be around us, and we need to take advantage.
To be successful in this time when information inundates us, we need to be able to communicate ideas effectively. Students need to develop this vital skill, as it provides opportunities to learn more, to influence others positively , and to be part of change.
As OPEN-MINDED individuals, we “understand and appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values, and traditions of other individuals and communities. We are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.”
IB students have a deep understanding of various cultures and views, bringing an appreciation of new views to both their academic study and their involvement in local and wider communities. The international mindedness compliments the missions of the best colleges, trade schools, and universities.
Students are especially open-minded during registration when they consider all their course options and can complement this with being a risk-taker and challenging themselves to take rigorous courses.
Students are effective COMMUNICATORS when they OPEN-MINDED to look at different perspectives. Other people’s views might be different to your own. OPEN-MINDED COMMUNICATORS actively listen to the perspectives of others and allow people the chance to convince you of their ideas or points of view.
Please don’t forget to complete the IB Student of the Month Survey to recognize an IB Student (full IB Diploma Career-related, or Certificate) for doing a great job or showing improvement with ATL skills or the LP in your classroom. Each month student(s) will be recognized in the last week of the month in Dr. Cohen's Smore newsletter.
STAFF SHOUTOUT for being open-minded and actively engaged in school wide MYP training as a BIG first step in implementing MYP in our Wall to Wall IB School. And a special SHOUT-OUT to Kim Becraft, the MYP Coordinator who took the lead on this training and did an amazing job organizing and effectively communicating with all throughout it.
Are you a rising junior interested in the FULL IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM or the CAREER_RELATED PROGRAM - please contact Natasha Ezerski (IB DP/CP Coordinator). And as always, Kim Becraft, (MYP Coordinator) is available to answer questions.
REPEAT: Culture of Respect Lessons
Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms. An online student training lesson, entitled "Culture of Respect," has been developed for students in grades 6 through 12. This online training lesson provides critical information that will help students better recognize the signs of inappropriate behaviors, including the various ways to report alleged/concerning incidents. The training includes a student survey that will provide school leaders with valuable data to assess the current culture and climate of respect at their schools and determine potential next steps to plan for improvements. Students will earn two SSL hours to complete the training.
The objectives of the training module are for students to know and be able to:
• Review collective responsibilities in promoting a positive school culture and ensuring the physical, social, and emotional safety for all students in alignment with the MCPS Be Well 365 initiative. Define bullying, cyberbullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias, hazing,
intimidation, and student gender norms.
• Recognize signs of hazing, bullying, and harassment, including sexual harassment/assault.
Identify reporting procedures to inform school administration of potential concerns and incidents.
• Analyze different scenarios and discuss possible consequences per the MCPS Student Code of Conduct Complete a feedback questionnaire, including an activity to help school administration gauge the level of concern in each of the areas addressed in the training module.
The Culture of Respect training will be completed through fifth period Advisory on December 11th or December 15th, 2020. Students may see the survey in their Canvas classroom before then, but do not need to do anything until their designated day in Advisory.
If you have any questions about the topics that will be covered, please contact me, or Elizabeth Maxey at elizabeth_maxey@mcpsmd.org.
If you have any questions or concerns about the topics that will be covered, please contact your student's administrator or counselor.
