Clarksburg High School
Weekly Message 9/19/21
A message from Principal Edward Owusu
Good morning Clarksburg High School Families
Monday begins the fourth week of school and we are well into coursework, homework, and assessments. Just a reminder that you may view grades and check status of work within ParentVUE or StudentVUE applications. Also reach out to staff as needed to check for understanding and ask questions.
This week CHS will be giving the Measurement of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment to all 9th and 10th grade students in both Reading and Math. The MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test that students take two to three times per school year. The MAP Growth measures what students know, regardless of their grade level. It also measures growth over time, allowing you to track your student’s progress throughout the school year. The results provide teachers, students, and families with an accurate assessment of a student’s ability, accurately measuring what a student knows and needs to learn.
The assessment will be administered on both Tuesday, September 21st (English) and September 23rd (Math) through homeroom classes. 11th and 12 graders who are not testing will also report to Homeroom for foundational lessons in Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Student Service Learning (SSL) hours, etc.
The schedule for both September 21st and 23rd will begin with testing and SEL lessons. Once testing and the lessons are complete students will resume with their regularly scheduled classes. Please see the schedule within this message.
Activity busses continue this Tuesday and Thursday after school. Busses depart Clarksburg at 4:30 pm. Please see the Activity Bus schedule on the Clarksburg Website.
In closing I want to remind students and families that safety is a priority at Clarksburg. It is critical for students to report any suspicious or out of the ordinary activity. Essentially when you see or hear something, please say something to a school staff member or adult at home.
In this newsletter you will find information about college and university visits to CHS, upcoming testing, our new PTSA News, and opting in for Google suite of applications.
As always, thank you for your continued support and trust. Together we are Clarksburg!

Letter from the PTSA President
September 2021
Dear Clarksburg High School Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! As we start this new year, we also want to reflect on the last one. 2020 was a year like no other. We faced challenges we could not have foreseen, reminders of how precious our connections are, and lessons on the importance of harnessing and embracing our voice. When the world stood still, we were working tirelessly to maintain some level of normalcy at home, at school, and at work. We joined hands and forces, albeit virtually, even when guidelines called on us to be physically apart. We channeled powers we never knew we had to be there for our families and our communities. This year, as our students return to the hallowed halls of their schools, it is even more imperative for us to join hands and rally together to support our new and returning Coyotes.
The PTSA is committed to being there for our beloved CHS community. Our mission, as the PTSA, is to, “To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before government bodies and other organizations that make a decision affecting children; To assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children, and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation”.
To carry out this mission, we will work hard to listen to you and to advocate on your behalf. We also hope you will join us in our meetings and be a member of the PTSA. Do visit this site to join us: https://chs-ptsa.memberhub.com/store# Your involvement will mean so much to our CHS community as parents are a vital part of the academic journey our children undertake. High school is one chapter in that journey and we hope to work with you to help make this chapter a positive and memorable one.
Please join us in our very first meeting of the year on October 19th, 2021. We will send out information about the meeting in the coming week. We look forward to hearing your ideas and concerns. Please also share with us how you would like to be involved to support the programs and activities we will carry out this year.
Thank you so very much for all of your support and may we all have a fun-tastic year!
Warmest of regards,
Nadia Syahmalina
CHS PTSA President 2021-2022
APPS and P-Tech Information Night for Grade 8 Students
Clarksburg High School is looking for passionate learners to join a cohort of similarly minded students in our APPS and P-TECH Program.

COVID Symptoms & Student Quarantines
This is particularly important as if your child has any of the following single symptoms they will be sent home and not be able to return to school until they have a negative test, alternate diagnosis, or complete a full 10-day quarantine. During that period of time, all other students who have been in close contact will have to be in a temporary quarantine while the other families wait on the outcome of that testing for your child. This could be potentially disruptive to your children and families moving in and out of quarantine and to avoid it takes all of us working together. It is a collective responsibility that we exercise extreme caution and be conservative in our approach.
The single symptoms that the health room staff screen for and will result in quarantine are cough, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell, fever ≥100.4°, sore throat, severe Headache, diarrhea or vomiting. Please do not send your children to school with any of these symptoms. This is essential for us to continue to remain in school without quarantine.
FREE COVID 19 TESTING:
See here: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/testing.html
Fully Vaccinated Exposure Exemption
Students and staff who are fully vaccinated (two weeks past their last dose) are exempt from quarantine if they have direct contact with someone who has tested positive or is suspected to have COVID-19.
- Students can continue to attend school in-person, and staff can continue to work in a school or office building.
- Fully vaccinated people should still monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days following an exposure.
- Recommended to get tested 3-5 days following a known exposure. Staff and students may report on-site as normal during this time as long as they do not have any COVID symptoms. If they experience symptoms, they should isolate and be tested for COVID-19.
Close contact is:
- Being 3 feet or less away in the classroom for 15 or more minutes during a 24-hour period, regardless of mask use.
- Being 6 feet or less away while eating or outdoors for 15 minutes or more during a 24-hour period, regardless of mask use.
If your child tests positive for COVID-19 please contact your health provider immediately, and contact Clarksburg High School at 240-740-6000. You may also contact any member of the Administrative team or you may contact our School Nurse:
