Clarksburg High School
Weekly Message 10/17/21
A message from Principal Edward Owusu
Good morning Clarksburg High School Families
Welcome to Homecoming Week 2021!!! It's been a highly anticipated week and we are thrilled for Homecoming to finally be here! This is a safe celebration on many fronts, welcoming back our alumni, celebrating our return to all things C'Burg, and ensuring that our school spirit shines in all we do!
One item I do need to highlight is in regards to students that are continuing to arrive late to classes. This is occurring throughout the school day. Since we are at the midpoint of October and the first marking period, it is critical that students are on time to class. This week and moving forward our school staff will take additional steps to ensure students are not lingering in halls, and that they make it to class on time. This will include additional staff in hallways, hall sweeps, and calls to parents and guardians for students that are repeatedly late to class. In some instances, after school detention will be issued. We appreciate everyone's efforts to end this bad habit.
Homecoming hallway decorating began this Sunday morning, and spirit week themes for the week, in order of day are Pajama Day, Jersey and Sports Day, Wacky-Tacky Day, Costume Day, and Battle of the Classes. In a addition a fantastic Powder Puff Football Game is planned during our Pep Rally on Friday. The Homecoming Dance will be spectacular! Dancing will occur outdoors under heated, lighted, and tented facilities. There will be games and activities for all. Please see the information contained in the newsletter.
This week Make-up testing for seniors that missed MCAP assessments will occur on Tuesday. This is a graduation requirement for seniors so we want to ensure they don't miss this opportunity.
Speaking of testing, please see the information regarding AP exams in the link.
Grade 9-11 picture retakes will occur on Tuesday, October 19. Students needing to retake their picture and receive an ID should request permission from their teacher to go to room 175 (Wrestling Room) to retake their photo. Photos will also be taken during lunch. Picture retakes will occur from 7:45 am - 2:00 pm
That evening, at 7 pm on Tuesday will the PTSA will meet in the cafeteria for its first meeting of the year. Members may attend in person or via Zoom Please see the information contained in this newsletter.
Looking ahead seniors may plan for their Senior Meeting and Senior Panoramic Class Photo on the morning of Tuesday, October 26 beginning at 8:00 am .
In this newsletter you will find information about Registration for Winter Sports, Advanced Placement Exams (Click Button), Clothing Recycling, the October Student Member of the Board (SMOB) Minute, Holiday Giving Project, college and university visits to CHS, Homecoming Plans, and more.
As always, thank you for your continued support and trust. Together we are Clarksburg!

The Holiday Giving Project
The Holiday Giving Project has provided Thanksgiving and December holiday assistance to low-income households for over 30 years. A network of social workers, school counselors, and human service professionals refer families in need of assistance. Local non-profits, faith-based organizations, and public agencies serve Holiday Giving recipients, as donations are available.
If you and your family are in need and would like to be referred for possible assistance for the holiday season, please complete this referral form to provide the required information. This information will be sent directly to our School Counselor, Mrs. Ioli, who will then enter it into the Holiday Giving Database on your behalf. While a referral is not a guarantee of assistance, the Project helps as many families in need as donations allow. Please complete this form no later than MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2021. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.

The Special Topic we will cover for the event is: Anxiety, Covid-19, and School. The presenter is Rasha Manoppo, a mental health specialist. After her presentation, we will hold open up the floor for Q/A. Students who join the meeting and participate in the discussion can also earn SSL hours. We have great programs we would like to implement this year so we hope you will join us to support the greater CHS community.
Please click this link to be a member: https://chs-ptsa.memberhub.com/store#
We have 112 members now! Thank you so much to all who have joined!
Please also consider volunteering with us. We are an all-volunteer group of moms and dads, uncles and aunts, grandparents, and friends. We all share the same concerns you do, especially when it comes to our children’s education and experience in school. Volunteering can take as little and as much of a time as you are able to. Volunteering can also be done virtually. We appreciate any and all input as well as any and all support.
Acclaimed director, Mira Nair, once said “It is because my roots are so strong that I can fly”. It really does take a village, and a community, to support our kids to ensure their roots (and wings) are strong enough to support them to fly. Therefore, we hope you will partner up with us to help strengthen all of our students’ roots and wings so they can soar through the sky.
Thank you for reading and may we have a great week!
Warmest of regards,
Clarksburg High School PTSA

Advanced Placement Exam Enrollment and Fee
Hello 2021-2022 AP Students and Parents,
Congratulations on taking an AP course this year! We applaud your commitment to challenging yourself with college-level learning. The opportunity to earn college credit in an AP course is acquired by taking the AP Exam associated with the course and is dependent on the AP exam score and specific college requirements. Exams for the AP courses are scheduled to be administered in schools via pencil and paper and held during the first two weeks in May. Please see below for details about registering.
AP Exam Enrollment - First, you need to have a College Board (CB) Account! With this, students can access PSAT, SAT, and AP scores online and have them sent to colleges. Some students may already be registered.
If you already have one, please do not create a 2nd account.Your same CB account login is used for PSAT, SAT and AP, so if you have ever created an account for one of these, you’ve done step one!
If you are new to AP and CB, you can create your account at https://myap.collegeboard.org/login.
Once students have an account, they will be given a “join code” from their AP teachers where they can join their teacher’s AP Classroom. Once a student enters the join code, they are automatically registered for that AP exam.
AP Exam Fees –
Each exam costs $96.00, which can be divided into two payments:
$40 deposit per exam is due by November 12, 2021
Remaining balance of $56 must be paid by Monday, April 25, 2022
College Board LATE FEE for any exam ordered after the November deadline: $40 (in addition to $96)
CANCELLATION FEE after the November deadline: $40 (money paid above the $40 will be refunded)
Students that do not pay the $40 exam deposit by November 12th will have their registration cancelled and an exam will not be ordered for them.
Reduced fees are available to families with financial need. Families requesting financial assistance with exam fees must fill out the Fee Waiver request form. The reduced fee is $15.00. If families do not meet the criteria but do still need financial assistance from MCPS for exam fees, please email Amber_M_Parks@mcpsmd.org.
Payments
All payments can be made by either cash, check, money order, or by credit card using the Online School Payment link. If sending in a check/money order, please make your check/money order payable to “Clarksburg High School.” Address your payment envelopes to Amber Parks. Students may also deliver payments to Room 157 during lunch.
Should you have any questions, please reach out to Amber_M_Parks@mcpsmd.org, the AP Coordinator.

MCAP Makeup Testing
Greetings Clarksburg Community,
On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, we will hold makeup testing for the Early Fall MCAP testing session that originally took place the first week of October. During makeup testing, the rest of the building will run on a normal Advisory Day bell schedule; because of this, we are prioritizing testing for seniors and our Montgomery College students who were unable to attend the original testing sessions.
Here is the testing schedule for Tuesday, October 19:
7:45 AM - MCAP ELA/Literacy Assessment
11:45 AM - MISA Science Assessment
1:15 PM - MCAP Math Assessments
Please CLICK HERE or go to bit.ly/chsmakeuptest and look up your student by ID number to see required testing. Students on the list to test will attend lunch and regularly scheduled classes when they are not testing that day.
If you have specific questions about your student’s testing requirements, email Julie_M_Murray@mcpsmd.org. For general information about MCAP testing, please see below.
Thank you,
CHS Administrators & Testing Coordinators
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As part of continued COVID-19 recovery efforts, the Maryland State Department of Education is conducting an early fall student assessment as one of several strategies to identify how students are performing academically. The results will help educators better understand student needs, so that we can address disrupted education and accelerate learning opportunities for all students. These results never stand alone in assessing student growth, and will be used in combination with other assessments and class work to gauge overall student performance.
The Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) is the overarching term used for all state assessments. MSDE will administer assessments in the Early Fall for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA/L), Mathematics, and Science (Maryland Integrated Science Assessment- MISA), as well as the Alternate Assessments in ELA, Mathematics and Science. The MCAP also includes assessments in Social Studies and the ACCESS for ELLs assessment for English language learners; however, for the Early Fall testing window, we are only administering the math, science, and English tests. Participation in these exams are a graduation requirement.
