"Stallions on Top" Newsletter
December/January Parental Newsletter for AVID, PBIS & SEL
Welcome
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Corner
In our SEL small groups, we are focusing on kindness, the power of words and how they can be hurtful. We want Sims to be a safe space for scholars to learn how to express themselves in appropriate ways and to use words that are encouraging to others as opposed to mean hurtful words that lead to further conflicts. At home, you can practice some of these tips.
SEL at SES
Tier 1(All Scholars)- Receive weekly SEL lessons during their SEL specials class.
Tier 2(Designated Scholars)- Receive weekly SEL small group support and interventions.
Tier 3(Designated Scholars)- Receive a staff mentor for emotional support and development.

Our focus for December is STAR notetaking and Call Outs. STAR notetaking is a strategy that gives scholars multiple opportunities to add to and review their notes. The purpose of STAR notetaking is for scholars to be able to better understand and comprehend their notes, which they will use to be successful on assessments. STAR notetaking is a great strategy that scholars can utilize throughout their educational experience that will help to increase their mastery and understanding of skills and concepts.
Scholars are required to maintain an AVID binder. We conduct monthly AVID binder checks to ensure scholars have all the required supplies. Scholars receive 15 Beckett Bucks for having a completed binder. Scholars can use the dojo points at the monthly PBIS store.
Another AVID strategy utilized by our teachers is the One-Pager. The One-Pager is a great culminating activity, which allows scholars to demonstrate their understanding of a lesson. Scholars use both visuals and words to convey their mastery of a skill or concept.

PBIS at SES
Greetings families!! PBIS at SES is off to an amazing start. Remember PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered framework used to promote a positive learning environment throughout our entire building. We thrive on building relationships in a safe environment through teaching and modeling our essential agreements. At Sims we are Kind-Hearted Scholarly Leaders who Problem Solve.
Scholars have already participated in two school stores. Our next store will be held Friday, December 9th. Scholars have several times throughout the day to earn Beckett Bucks for following the Essential Agreements. Please ask your scholars each day if they earned any “Beckett Bucks”. If they did not earn any, ask them what they can do differently to follow Essential Agreements. The next school store will be held on Friday, January 27th.
We value your input and want to hear from our parents and community regarding our PBIS Framework. Please complete the 2022-2023 Community Feedback Form.
