During an extensive meeting to highlight last year’s achievements 11.36 M Passengers and 77.6 K Aircraft Movements at Sharjah International Airport in 2017

Sharjah International Airport (SIA) reviewed its last year’s achievements in aircraft movement and passenger growths including freight volume, the future plans and programs that will be implemented this year, in a senior management meeting which was held last Monday in Al Noor Island in Sharjah.

During the meeting, the important achievements and 2017 figures were announced, which contributed to enhancing SIA’s regional and international position.   SIA’s passenger numbers reached to 11.36M, with an increase of 327,000 passengers as compared to last year. This increase was attributed to the geographical location of SIA and the continuous enhancement of its services and facilities, especially with the availability of  Smart Gates.

Aircraft movements (regular and irregular) recorded 77,627 movements of takeoff and landing, including 6,615 movements in December which was supported by the addition of new airlines and their access to new destinations as well.

The meeting discussed the performance of the air freight sector which achieved good figures of more than 148,312 tons, with the sea/air freight volume reaching to about 10,606 tons despite the regional and global challenges facing the sector. SIA is continuously benefiting from its strategic geographical location and its proximity to many seaports in raising the volume of air freight.

HE Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority, said “SIA’s success last year was achieved thanks to the directives and leadership of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and the close coordination of HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of Sharjah Executive Council, resulting various plans and programs to enhance customer satisfaction by upgrading the services and facilities provided by SIA.”

He added, “The results of 2017 indicate the continued growth in passenger traffic, aircraft movements and cargo operations. These are indicators for the potential of SIA and the civil aviation sector in general towards achieving economic and tourism growth of the Emirate of Sharjah.  We thank our staff, strategic partners from the government and private sectors for their valuable efforts in achieving these results.”

HE Sheikh Faisal bin Saoud Al Qassimi, Director of Sharjah Airport Authority, said: “The positive indicators achieved by SIA in the number of passengers and aircraft movements during the past year reflect the efforts by all parties working at the airport.  They have contributed to the global positioning of SIA as one of the best airports in the region.”

HE Sheikh Faisal bin Saoud Al Qassimi added, “Sharjah International Airport was able to gain the confidence of a wide range of passengers, customers, airlines and air cargo companies. We are pleased with these results, driving us to continue our work and explore other avenues to contribute to the sustainable development of  Sharjah and the UAE.”

During 2017, Sharjah International Airport has witnessed the implementation of many initiatives and community projects, as well as received new airlines, launched additional flights and won several recognitions .  Last year, the airport has recruited many UAE nationals as part of its Emiratisation programme. The most notable achievements are:

SIA Expansion

Based on the directives of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to take necessary measures to launch the future plan for the expansion of SIA, Sharjah International Airport granted Parsons Overseas the management of the new airport expansion project with a value of 58 million AED following a tender. The total cost of the expansion is estimated at 1.5 billion AED.  The expansion will foresee a capacity increase to reach about 20 million passengers in 2027.

Associated Projects

A New Bridge

In implementation of the directives of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sharjah International Airport Authority started working on building a new bridge for airport users, which will ease the traffic flow and effectively facilitate the arrival of passengers and customers to SIA. By the end of last year, 85% of the bridge was completed and will be fully operational soon.

New Agreements and Partnerships

* Two commercial agreements were signed with Gama Aviation Services, under which Gama will build and operate a new private terminal at SIA with an investment cost exceeding AED 110 million. The second agreement grants Gama a franchise for the operation of ground handling services for private aircrafts and business aviation at SIA.

* The inaugural flights of Russian Airlines from St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, Russia were received.

* In March 2017, SIA received the inaugural flight of IndiGo between Sharjah and Calicut, India, where Sharjah is the sixth international destination of this airline.

International Exhibitions

During the past year, Sharjah International Airport has participated in many local and international aviation industry exhibitions to introduce its services, learn about best practices, exchange experiences and keep abreast of the latest developments and technologies in this sector. The most prominent of these contributions are:

* Participation in the 2017 Air Cargo Europe was held at Exhibition Center in Munich, Germany on May 9 -12, with efforts to enhance the regional and international position of the airport and to highlight its competitiveness.

* Participation in the 4th AirCargo Africa 2017, where the latest services and facilities offered by SIA to various aviation and air cargo operators were presented.

* Participation in the World Travel Market (WTM) which was held in London from 3 to 6 November.

* Participated in the Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition (MITT), which took place during 14 to 16 March in Moscow, Expo Vergrounds, with the participation of a large number of representatives from the tourism, travel, aviation and hospitality sectors.

* As part of its participation in the Berlin International Travel and Tourism Fair “ITB Berlin”, which was held from 8 to 12 March 2017, Sharjah International Airport represent the  latest development projects adopted by the Government of Sharjah by showcasing its services and facilities .

Local Exhibitions

Sharjah International Airport featured its latest achievements, expansion plans and services during its participation in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) held at the Dubai World Trade Center from 24-27 April 2017.

* Sharjah International Airport participated in the GITEX Technology Week 2017, which was held at the Dubai World Trade Center from 8 to12 October under the umbrella of the Sharjah Government  SIA Authority showcased the smart services provided by the airport to passengers, customers and businessmen.

* As part of its efforts to attract Emirati talents and professionals, Sharjah International Airport participated in the 19th National Career Exhibition from 15 to 17 February 2017 at Sharjah Expo Center

Community Initiatives

Sharjah International Airport has launched several community initiatives, as part of its corporate social responsibility. The most important of these initiatives are:

* Over the past 12 months, Sharjah International Airport honored 18 winners in the  “Because We Care” program, an initiative launched by the Authority eight years ago.

* Sharjah International Airport hostedthe “Products of Hope” exhibition, which promotes products that are hand-made by inmates of the Correctional & Punishment Organizations of Sharjah Police.

* “Your Iftar Is On Us” initiative has distributed thousands of free Iftar meals to fasting passengers and customers, as part of the observance of the  holy month of Ramadan.

* In February 2017, Sharjah International Airport organized the Annual Ceremony at Al-Jawaher Center for Events and Conferences to honor outstanding employees, strategic partners and those who contributed to the achievements made by SIA during 2016.

Hosted the Productive Families Exhibition from 5 to 9 March with the participation of a number of families that offered a range of perfumes, incense and other distinctive products.

A special event was organized for the Hajj season on August 23 -24, in cooperation with the Department of Awqaf and the Ministry of Health.  The event is in line with the Authority’s efforts to provide fast and efficient facilitate flights for pilgrims such the the allocation of Smart Gate counters and dedicated team to assist throughout the process.

* A three-day “Back to School” campaign, was organized by the Authority on September 7- 9.  The Authority welcomed the families and their children with fun activities and gifts as they return from summer break.

* SIA has also launched various cultural and religious initiatives throughout the year such as the celebration of the UAE National Day, commemoration of the Martyrs day, among others.
