FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 20, 2024 San Francisco, CA — Acción Latina presents “Paseo Artistico: Women of the Resistance”, a free bilingual community art event Saturday March 9, 2024 in the 24th Street/Calle 24 Latino Cultural District featuring a line-up of Latina artists and women of color whose art reflects solidarity, peace and activism in a time of global conflicts. Inspired by the mural “Women of the Resistance” painted by Lucia Gonzales Ippolito on Balmy Alley to celebrate and highlight women who perhaps don’t make covers of magazines but still make a big difference, the all-day event features a line-up of talented intergenerational women artists in the Mission District.

Originally intended as an interactive art walk down 24th Street, Paseo Artistico “Women of the Resistance” begins with Golden Thread Theater presenting a drag performance by Mama Ganuush, a Trans Palestinian African drag artist and activist at Brava Theater Cabaret. Performances continue on the hour heading up 24th Street to Balmy Alley for Lucia Ippolito’s mural talk followed by a live musical performance by Las Coronelas trio of Mexican and Mexican-American women Chantel Hernandez, Martha Rodriguez Salazar and Susan Peña co-presented by Community Music Center and Precita Eyes in front of the Women of Resistance mural. The activities move to Evolved SF Gallery for a portrait photography experience with Alexa Treviño. A traditional son jarrocho fandango will take place at Medicine for Nightmares Bookstore and Gallery featuring musical duo “Mujeres Del Son” Evelyn Donaji and Nuria Armenta and guests. Berta Hernandez will present a theatrical performance in solidarity with Palestine “Viva, Viva Palestina!” at Mission Cultural Center. Multimedia artist and dancer Andrea Rodriguez will perform “La Rumba No Para” that tells a salsa love story about growing up in the Mission District at Dance Mission Theater. The Juan R. Fuentes Gallery will host the opening of a gallery exhibit of paintings by Salvadoran artist and Mission Street Vendor Ms. Meg featuring colorful birds of Central America. The evening culminates with headliner Diana Gameros live music performance about her own experience as a Mexican immigrant artist and the solidarity she found sharing her music. Gameros headlines the Encuentritos concert with two other female led bands at Acción Latina.

History Matters in the Mission Full show

Click above to see entire show of History Matters in the Mission video from October 23, 2021

History Matters in the Mission (HMM) documents important cultural, artistic and political events in the Mission District based on the archival material from 50 years of El Tecolote Bilingual Newspaper, and interviews with local legendary artists and activists from the early 1970’s including Yolanda Lopez, Michael Ríos, Juan Gonzales, Joan Holden and Carlos Barón. Lead artist and director Paul S. Flores interviewed each local luminary to craft performances as both interpretations and reenactments of important events in The Mission from the 1970’s that still resonate today. Flores collaborated with choreographer Vanessa Sanchez, who also plays Yolanda Lopez, and musician Pedro Gomez, costume designer Jessica Recinos, puppeteer Jonathan Youtt, actress Edna Mira Raia, and Augmented Reality designer Shamsher Virk, to recreate the sounds and looks of the five Mission luminaries whose stories will be performed at different sites along 24th Street in the Latino Cultural District. Each outdoor site and venue will host a 5-10 minutes performance highlighting one of the local legends. Augmented Reality featuring videos, artwork and archival photos from El Tecolote will be available for download through your smartphone.
