Carbon Innovation

Together we can take on greenhouse gas emissions

True progress in the fight against climate change means cooperation. That’s why Oxy offers powerful, practical solutions other industries can use to decarbonize—including developing net-zero oil and fuels, geologic CO2 storage and carbon management advisory services.

Horizon of planet Earth

Carbon Innovation Overview

Carbon Management Leadership

Our Oxy Low Carbon Ventures (OLCV) subsidiary is leading the way in transformational and sustainable business models that use human-made CO2 emissions in new ways. These innovations include net-zero oil and fuels, net-zero chemicals and net-zero concrete. All made possible by utilizing our vast existing CO2 infrastructure and 40+ year legacy of carbon management leadership.

Building on this industry-leading expertise, OLCV is creating new options for numerous industries to reduce emissions on a global scale. We are developing projects to capture and remove CO2 emissions from both the atmosphere and industrial sources that can then be used to create products or retire carbon permanently.

Progress Through Multiple Core Initiatives

Initiative Overview

Initiative Overview

The scientific community agrees there will be no silver bullet to effectively zero in on climate change targets. Success will demand a range of commercial-scale solutions working in tandem. That’s why we’re developing multiple carbon management solutions today that we expect to commercialize and deploy at scale.

CCUS Project Development

CCUS Project Development

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage initiatives are helping us tackle the problem of atmospheric carbon head-on. We’re commercializing exciting, first-of-their-kind technologies and projects that are accelerating emissions reduction around the world. These efforts include:

  • Expanding CO2 capture facilities for global-scale potential
  • Maximizing geologic CO2 storage capacity utilizing existing infrastructure
  • Exploring new capture and use technologies such as Direct Air Capture (DAC), mineralization and biosynthesis processes
  • Utilizing CO2 to create products such as net-zero and low-carbon oil, ethylene and PolyVinyl Chloride
  • Providing CCUS technical advisory services to other organizations

Reducing Direct Emissions

Reducing Direct Emissions

Accomplishing big-picture change starts at home. So Oxy is implementing a number of projects at its facilities around the world to enhance our business by reducing Scope 1 emissions—direct greenhouse gas emissions resulting from sources we own or control. These include:

  • Implementing technology to find, fix and measure emissions for a lower-emitting operational system
  • Creating operational efficiencies that reduce power requirements
  • Reducing methane and CO2 emissions by flare reduction and equipment upgrades
  • Implementing greenhouse gas monitoring systems

Energy Efficiency and Zero-Emission Power

Energy Efficiency and Zero-Emission Power

The most efficient way to optimize energy or eliminate emissions is to prevent energy demand in the first place. To that end, Oxy is also taking numerous steps to improve energy efficiency and create operational power that minimizes our environmental footprint.

  • Applying advanced technology that reduces operational energy consumption
  • Making investments in renewable energy such as solar and wind power
  • Putting those renewable resources to work in everyday field applications
  • Partnering with NET Power and scaling implementation of this reliable, zero-emission energy technology

Project Spotlight

1PointFive: Taking Direct Air Capture from Possible to Practical

Through a development license with Carbon Engineering, Oxy’s 1PointFive is advancing large-scale Direct Air Capture. Its first facility, STRATOS, is under construction in the Permian basin. STRATOS is designed to extract 500,000 metric tons of atmospheric CO2 annually—laying the foundation for commercial-scale DAC deployment.
