Who We Are

One Truckee River is a nonprofit that manages a coalition of public and private partners working together to ensure a healthy, thriving, and sustainable river connected to the heart and minds of its community. Our vision is to work together to realize a Truckee River that flows clear and clean; quenches our thirst; sustains the river’s natural ecology, cultural resources and wildlife; and connects residents and visitors to unparalleled opportunities for recreation and regeneration.

The Truckee River and its 121-mile natural corridor is managed and regulated by federal, state, tribal authorities, and local agencies. One Truckee River coordinates with existing agencies' efforts and encourages collaborations to achieve the goals established by the One Truckee River Management Plan.

Did You Know?

The Truckee River is the only surface-water outflow from Lake Tahoe, with a 3,000 square mile river basin. The Truckee River Basin experiences wide fluctuations in annual runoff volumes, ranging from high water year averages of about 2 million acre-feet to about 115,000 acre-feet in low water years

The Truckee River is home to a vibrant ecosystem of plants and animals and is critical to maintaining Pyramid Lake’s endangered Cui-ui Lakesucker and threatened Lahontan Cutthroat Trout.

The Truckee River provides 85% of the drinking water for the Truckee Meadows region, supporting 400,000+ people and 7,000+ businesses. It’s fed by Tahoe, Donner, Independence, Boca, Stampede, and Prosser Lakes, as well as direct snowmelt and smaller streams.

People have lived, traveled, gathered, hunted, and fished along the Truckee River and its tributaries for more than 10,000 years. The Truckee River is located on the ancestral lands of the Wa She Shu (Washoe) and Numu (Northern Paiute), whose descendants still consider it sacred. Members of the 3 Great Basins Tribes - the Paiute, the Shoshone and the Washoe - continue to care for the river and its resources today.

What We Do

At One Truckee River, we work with our watershed coalition partners to implement projects and programs to protect water quality, create a thriving river environment, conduct adult education and community outreach, and facilitate discussions about the long-term management of the Truckee River. We’ve identified 100+ action items in our One Truckee River Management Plan and are collaborating, coordinating, and fundraising to achieve these goals.

OUR WORK INCLUDES:

  • Coordinating the One Truckee River Partnership Council – consisting of 42 representatives from 31 local agencies and nonprofits sharing resources and expertise and building consensus on project priorities.

  • Improving access, facilities, and signage along the Truckee River Corridor for residents and visitors to recreate and enjoy nature along the river corridor.

  • Leading a regional coordinated vegetation management effort to improve the Truckee’s ecological function.

  • Providing public education and outreach around actions we ALL can take to improve our region’s gem, the Truckee River. Your actions matter!
