An Auckland bakery is denying it served what's been called one of the stingiest sandwiches of all time, a picture of which caused the internet to go berserk.

The Papakura Bakery made headlines after a photo of the sandwich was posted in the Papakura and Takanini Grapevine private Facebook group. The photo showed the sandwich, allegedly purchased from the bakery, containing two measly slivers of meat.

The woman who posted the photo told Newshub she wasn't disappointed, adding "I still ate the sandwich - it was yum".

Newshub agreed not to name the woman, who said she posted the photo for a laugh.

But this didn't stop the photo attracting worldwide attention - and people posted on social media expressing their outrage.

"Do they not want to be the best bakery? I mean they want people to come back right?" one commenter said on the Mai FM Facebook page.

"That's a bread sandwich.. Not a ham sandwich," another wrote.

The bakery strongly denies the sandwich was purchased from them, however.

"It's not right," a spokesman for the business told Newshub. "We do a whole piece of ham and salad and cheese in it [the sandwich].

"These sandwiches we make everyday - if people don't believe us they can come have a look."

The incident follows another fast food fail in Hamilton last week, where a video of a customer being abused by a McDonald's employee in the drive-thru of the Five Cross Roads restaurant prompted an apology from the company.
