Putnam City North Student Arrested After Handgun Found

A student at Putnam City North was arrested after a loaded handgun was found on them, according to Putnam City Schools administration.

The school says the student was reported to the administration and the school went into lockdown as the administration and police investigated.

A parent tells News 9 that the metal detectors were not working this morning and someone was hand-checking the bags.

We reached out to the district on that and have not heard back

Using a handheld metal detector, campus police found a loaded handgun, the school says. Campus police took the weapon and arrested the student, according to the school.

The campus lockdown was then lifted, according to Putnam City Schools.

The school released the following statement:

Putnam City North Families,

This morning it was reported to Putnam City North High School administration that a student had a weapon on campus. The school went into lockdown while school administration and campus police investigated. The student was promptly located and checked using a handheld metal detector where a loaded handgun was found. Campus police immediately took possession of the weapon and placed the student under arrest. The lockdown was released and classes resumed. 

A student in possession of any type of weapon on school property violates District Policy BE for weapons and District Policy EH for student conduct. This situation will be addressed according to Putnam City District Policy and State Law.
