Gas Leak Causes Evacuation At Wheeler Middle School

A gas leak has caused an evacuation Monday morning at Wheeler Middle School.

The leak happened near Southeast 25th Street and South Stiles Avenue in southeast Oklahoma City.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department said a worker struck a gas line and caused a big leak.

The entire middle school was evacuated, officials said.

Firefighters said the roadway will be blocked near South Byers Avenue and Southeast 23rd Street.

Oklahoma City Police said students are being moved to the recreation center at H.C. Schilling Park. The students will stay at the recreation center for the remainder of the day, according to police.

Parents are welcome to check their kids out at the park if they wish.

Oklahoma City Public Schools released the following letter to parents and families after the evacuation:

Wheeler Families,

Students and staff are currently evacuated of the building due to a gas line issue at a construction site nearby. Oklahoma Natural Gas and the Fire Department are at the school assessing the situation. Meanwhile, students are at the Schilling Recreation Center (539 SE 25th St Oklahoma City, OK 73129) and lunch will be provided. Parents can pick up their students at the recreation center if they'd like. Families picking up students should line up on 25th street and stay in their vehicles to follow student check out procedures.

At 12:30 pm, District teams will make a decision regarding this afternoon's learning and activities. We will keep you updated regarding this ongoing situation as needed.
