Bridge Speaker

GITA’s 32nd Annual Bridge Speaker event serves as a bridge between Black History Month in February and Women’s History Month in March, and we are excited to be celebrating another year of strong empowering voices. You are officially invited to join us at GITA’S 32nd Annual Bridge Speaker featuring Dr. Lorgia García Peña! There will be a keynote address followed by a short question and answer session.

Additionally, the MSU Denver Womyn of Color Collective is also hosting a circle conversation with the speaker later in the day featuring her latest book Community as Rebellion. If you would like to know more about the WOC Collective Affinity group or would like more info on attending the afternoon circle conversation, please contact Javonne Archibeque at [email protected].

About Our Speaker

Dr. García Peña is Latinx Studies scholar, activist and writer. Currently, she serves as Professor in the Effron Center for the Study of America and the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University. Through a transnational, multidisciplinary lens, grounded on humanistic approaches to history and literature, García Peña studies blackness, colonialism, migration and diaspora with a special focus on Black Latinx. Her work is concerned with the ways in which antiblackness and xenophobia intersect in the Global North producing categories of exclusion that lead to violence and erasure. Her research insists on highlighting the knowledge, cultural, social and political contributions of people who have been silenced from traditional archives paying attention to the intersections of blackness, colonialism and migration, and centering Black Latinx lives.

Dr. García Peña is the author of three award-winning books, The Borders of Dominicanidad: Race, Nations and Archives of Contradictions (Duke, Fall 2016), Translating Blackness: Latinx Colonialities in Global Perspective (Duke, Fall 2022) and Community as Rebellion (Haymarket, May 2022).
