The Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program uses regular inspections to prevent pest damage. IPM staff identifies and correct conditions that encourage pests by reducing food, water, and shelter for pests and by eliminating unnecessary pesticide applications. This integrated approach results in the most economical long term solution with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment. Only certain products are approved for use in and around MCPS facilities. By law, only registered pest control workers may apply pesticides or herbicides in a school building or on school grounds (COMAR 15.05.02.10). Restrictions include products available for personal use at home. All MCPS staff and school-related organizations (i.e., PTA, booster clubs, and athletic departments) must comply with this law.
If a pest or weed problem is identified, submit a service request via Asset Essentials describing the problem so that IPM staff can respond. IPM staff may make recommendations such as improving sanitation, making structural repairs, or educating occupants.
If a pesticide/herbicide is found illegally stored or used on MCPS property, IPM staff will confiscate it and report it to the principal in writing. The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) has the authority to issue a citation in the amount of $2,500 for a first violation and $5,000 for subsequent offenses.
