A man has been praised for coming up with a 'genius' test to show his wife that real diamonds were no different to fake ones - and it saved him lots of money, too.

Taking to TikTok, Josie, @josie__francis, shared a video of her sister-in-law opening two gifts from her brother, both of which looked identical.

He then explained that one was a pair of genuine diamond earrings, and the other was a much cheaper pair made from cubic zirconia, but they were both in the exact same packaging.

The man said that his wife had to choose and she could keep whichever she liked, but the other was going back to the shop for a refund - and she then inadvertently picked the cheaper pair.

Josie captioned the video "this was so good" and wrote over the first scene: "For Christmas, my brother got his wife a pair of diamond earrings and an identical pair of cubic zirconia earrings and whichever she picks she keeps lol. Merry Christmas!"

Then the brother can be heard saying: "So one of those are real, the other is not. You pick one and the other one goes back.

"Which one do you think is real?"

Can you tell the difference? (

The wife at first looked shocked but then she burst into laughter as she realised the challenge that had been presented to her.

She then begins scrutinising the two sets of earrings, looking at them in different lights, before Josie adds: "She picked the cubics, lol."

Josie's video has been viewed nearly five million times and over 2,600 people have commented on the clip.

One said: "This is genius, most people can't tell the difference. Heck, sometimes the fakes are prettier."

And a second wrote: "If they look identical why would she want him to waste money on real diamonds?"

And a third, named Kelly, added: "Honestly if you can't tell which are which then keep the cubic zirconia anyway and return the real ones. Use the money for something fun! Win-win."
