Are content creators taking the place of traditional "celebrities"? Yes, says beauty influencer and educator Alexis Androulakis, also one half the Lipstick Lesbians on TikTok. “Creators on platforms are about to shift into the roles celebrities used to own,” she says. “It's not a coincidence that talent management agencies are buying influencer agencies and absorbing them.” The difference between a celebrity and a creator, from Androulakis’ perspective, is that when you fall in love with a celebrity, “you fall in love with a character.” However, a content creator has to “win you over as themselves.” She points to J Lo, and the discourse around J Lo’s latest album and documentary, as an example of where we are today with “influencer culture vs. celebrity culture.” What do you think? What’s the best way for companies to use generative AI? “The single most important quality that companies and their leaders need to have these days is the ability to walk away from the status quo,” says MIT Scientist Andrew McAfee. “This preference for the way things currently are” is “one of the deepest barriers to starting to use this technology and experimenting,” he adds.
