One of the problems of digital design – is that it needs to be for all, not some #inclusion #accessibility

🔹Digital Birth Certificate UPDATE 🔹 If you use accessible settings on your smartphone - and you have the Zoom function switched on, this is what the DBC would look like. ➡️ This is an example - of an accessible zoom text display of the DBC. There are about 453,000 people who are blind or have low vision living in Australia.

Currently, many people who are blind or have low vision may not have a passport or driver licence – so are required to use a mix of paper documents to prove their identity. Often they use their paper birth certificates as their KEY form of ID to:
🔹access financial products and services e.g. opening bank accounts, buying a house
🔹enter licensed premises e.g. bars, clubs
🔹complete workplace checks e.g. (police check, Working with Children Check, NDIS Worker Screening) Using and carrying a piece of paper around – it can be easily lost, torn or soiled (and it can’t be laminated). It’s a hassle to apply for a replacement if lost or unusable. Also, pieces of paper can be difficult to locate amongst other files and folders.

Designing for inclusion and accessibility – has to be from the onset, not retrospectively. The DBC app has been designed to international accessibility standards (WCAG 3.0) from the beginning – utilising assistive technology such as VoiceOver, Zoom and 40-cell Refreshable Braille Display – so customers can conveniently locate, open and securely use their DBC on their phones. Part of this design thinking, we will start a pilot early next year – with 100 Vision Australia clients who are blind or have low vision who will be able to opt in to receive a free DBC. They will test the app and provide feedback on its accessibility and future use cases of the DBC when the app is fully rolled out.

Their direct feedback will be used to improve the app’s accessibility functions ahead of launch. Today, we’re recognising International Day of People with Disability #IDPwD – and looking forward to partnering with Vision Australia on this pilot to ensure the Digital Birth Certificate is accessible for everyone. #digital #people #design #digitalbirthcertificate

As the product manager of the #digitalbirthcertificate, I'm proud to share the below feedback that our team recently received from an independent 3rd party audit. "The results of the accessibility review have revealed that the DBC App presents very minor accessibility barriers for users with disabilities and is a credit to the NSW Department of Customer Service's time and effort towards making the application accessible." Aiming to remove all barriers to create an inclusive experience for every single user.

Whilst designing for accessibility adds time and cost to projects, it’s absolutely essential for inclusion. Mobile devices are fully capable so there’s no excuse. #accessibility #digitaldesign

What an incredible effort NSW Government and Victor Dominello MP for adopting inclusive and accessible design practices from the inception. Following WCAG 3.0 guidelines (still a WIP draft) showcases your futuristic approach towards digital services. Kudos for setting high standards for all the digital technology companies to follow 👏 🙏

NSW Government have got it right - designing for inclusion and accessibility. And correctly identifying end users who will derive high value from this new digital capability. Which will prove viability and drive uptake of the new digital credential . Victor Dominello MP NSW Department of Customer Service Thoughtworks

Excellent to see the centralisation and digitalization of key documents! Great to see inclusion and accessibility being kept at the forefront of these initiatives. I am curious however, if this will allow people like myself with foreign birth certificates, that are in another language to upload them into the database.

This is such a great development! My project and I are watching this with great interest.
