Overview of learning management systems

- [Instructor] Before we begin learning how to use Canvas, let's take a second to understand what it is. Canvas is a learning management system, or LMS. A learning management system is an online platform where instructors and learners can collaborate in order to improve learner achievement. They allow instructors to create an online course. They can add assignments and resources that learners can then access outside of the classroom. An LMS can help to grade these assignments and deliver quick, high quality feedback. They also allow instructors to communicate with learners in a variety of different ways. Essentially, a learning management system allows instructors to organize and optimize their entire course process. For learners, the learning management system allows them to access your course online. They can find their course syllabus and assignments, including due dates. They can access and use course resources from anywhere. And they can even turn in assignments and view up-to-date grades. Also, learners can use a learning management system to maximize communication and collaboration with both the instructor as well as other learners. In the digital age, learning management systems also provide an excellent opportunity for learners to improve their digital literacy skills, while fostering important digital citizenship skills. For both instructors and learners, an LMS can be used in and out of the physical classroom to help and improve communication and drive learner achievement. Let's get started and find out how Canvas can help you.
