If you were forced to choose, would you save your daughter or your son? If shots are fired at you, would you run as fast as you can or would you drop down and play dead? As a Jewish kid with a holocaust-survivor grandpa, I was forced to think of these questions quite often. It’s so engraved in my psyche that the first thought that ran through my mind when I gave birth to my second child and heard the midwife say, “keep pushing, I can see blond curls”, was GOOD, if need be it will be easier to hide her as a gentile. (yes, we all have “That” thought even for just one minute). This is why the horrific events of October 7th have pushed us over the edge. We thought we are a new breed of Jews, that we'd transcended the historic image of the frightened Shtetl Jew, hiding until the Pogrom passes. We embraced a new identity—proud, confident, with a homeland and robust defense forces to keep us safe. But maybe that's not enough? So many of us feeling exactly this right now. It isn’t an anti-Israel protest when they’re calling for: “Death to the Jews” as they did last week. This is happening across so many countries- not just Canada. Yes, it is for the government and police to step up. But, often in recent history, we have seen companies step up where governments aren’t, and so it also begs the question: what is your company doing to combat the 300%+ increase in antisemitic hate speech and hate crimes? And how is your company supporting Jewish employees who are all of a sudden facing antisemitism to an extent they never experienced before?
