📢 Our Special issue “Reconceptualizing public sphere(s) in the digital age? On the role and future of public sphere theory” ed. by me and Mike Schäfer is out in ICA's and OxfordJournal's #CommunicationTheory! Many scholars responded to our call for papers: Sixty-eight ext. abstracts were submitted in response to our call, of which 18 were invited to submit full papers and ten were finally accepted and published. All papers are freely accessible online: https://lnkd.in/esNBvrbg In our introductory editorial Mike Schäfer and I present nine theses on public sphere theory. Based on an empirical meta-analysis we show that theorizing on public spheres is alive and that the volume of publications has steadily increased (up to 800 p.a.). Within this growing body of literature, the relationship between theoretical and empirical contributions has changed: Theoretical contributions on the topic of public sphere(s) accounted for more than 70% before 2000, but this percentage has dropped to slightly more than 50% now. We also show that scholarship on public sphere(s) has several pronounced biases. It is for example still "Western"-centric. The "digital turn" has also led to an increase of contributions focusing on Asia due to the growing interest in Asian tech and social media platforms. We hope that this Special Issue will further scholarly discourse on public sphere(s), which Nancy Fraser (2009) once described as a fundamental social-scientific discovery comparable to major innovations in the natural sciences #publicsphere #communications #digitalization
