Arnold Loewy Obituary

Arnold Herbert Loewy
Lubbock - Arnold Herbert Loewy, age 81, passed away at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas on July 5, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Arnold enjoyed an illustrious 57-year career as a renowned public speaker and legal scholar, through which he left a lasting and indelible imprint on the academy and the legal community at large. There are many lawyers and judges in our community who were touched deeply by the caring and thoughtful way Arnold approached the law.
Arnold was born on June 9, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated Lincoln High School in Philadelphia at the age of 16, and then attended Boston University for undergrad and law school, where he received both his bachelors and JD degrees. In 1963, he received his LL.M from Harvard Law School.
Arnold started teaching law at the University of Connecticut in 1964, at only 24 years of age. He relocated to Chapel Hill in 1968, where he taught at the University of North Carolina School of Law for another 38 years. In 2006, Arnold retired from UNC as the Graham Kenan Professor of Law Emeritus and embarked on the third and final stage of his distinguished professional career, serving as the George R. Killam Chair of Criminal Law at Texas Tech University. At Texas Tech, Arnold started and led the annual Criminal Law Symposium that brought leading criminal law experts from around the world to Lubbock to discuss the latest thinking on criminal law research and scholarship. The symposium became one of the most important criminal law conferences in the country. Arnold retired from Texas Tech in June 2021, one month before his passing.
In addition to law, Arnold had two other great passions: sports and family. He was a passionate supporter of UNC and Texas Tech sports and a long-time member of the Rams Club and the Red Raider Club. Arnold was also a huge supporter of all Boston professional teams, having learned to love the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots during his college and law school years in Boston. Arnold frequently travelled across the country to watch his favorite teams play.
Arnold leaves behind a devoted and loving family, who miss him greatly – his wife Judith, his four children Julianne Loewy, Deborah Squires (Bao Huynh), Robert Loewy (Jennifer O'Kieffe) and Atara Oliver (Yehoishophot), and his seven grandchildren, Tabitha Dusseau, Eli Dusseau, Melissa Squires, Charlotte Loewy, Shneur Zalman Oliver, Moshe Oliver and Shaina Oliver. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel Frank Loewy and Florence Loewy, and his brother, James Loewy (Kathy).
Graveside services will be held for Arnold on Monday, July 12, 2021 at 11:00 a.m., at Judea Reform Cemetery, located at 2560 Jones Ferry Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27516. There will be a lunch served after the service at Homewood Suites, located at 3600 Mt Moriah Rd, Durham, NC 27707.

Not sure what to say?

He taught the best law class I ever had at UNC, Supreme Court adjudication, at his house in the evenings, we discussed that years Supreme Court docket cases for hours, then voted and assigned students to write opinions and dissents. It was worth going to law school just for his class. He had an incredibly agile mind, superb legal judgment. I saw him once years later and thanked him, he was very kind.

I had the pleasure of talking with Arnold for a few Hours of time, over a several year period about business and investments in colleges and TIAA. He opened up about himself and he had excellent character. I am sorry to learn about his passing, but happy to have known him.

I just found out that Arnie passed away. We exchanged emails every so often.
He and I were close together when we were "roommates" at Boston University (I later went to Suffolk U). We kept in touch throughout all these years.
I am sorry I did not hear about his passing away. I knew he was suffering from cancer and he told me about the trips to took weekly.
We last met out here in California in 2007,
Again, my condolences to Judy.

Arnold's was the first voice I heard at UNC Law in1969. Since I was from Boston, I felt at home. My wife (Anne) was a student of his 3 years later. He teased me that just like Justice Abe Fortas my wife was smarter than me and I made fun of his taste for the Hillbilly music on his tape player as we drove to distant UNC football games.
Professor Loewy personified the words of
the prophet Micah(6:8) since he did justice, and loved kindness, and walked humbly with his God.

Mr. Loewy was my criminal law professor at UNC Law School in 1972 and my Constitutional Seminar Law Professor. More than that, he was a friend. He was the pitcher on our law school softball team and I was the catcher. I never could bring myself to call him Arnold or Arnie, so when he would make a good pitch during a game, I would yell: "Good pitch Mr. Loewy". In looking back on his caring and positive influence on me and on many other law students, I must say, "Thank you and good pitch, Mr. Loewy".

Professor Lowey was my criminal law teacher in 1971-1972, my first year at UNC-LAW. Professor Lowey was an outstanding teacher and a very good man. I will never forget his exam, now famous, entitled "The Great Pizzeria Inferno". I will miss him personally, and the fraternity of outstanding law teachers will miss a teacher without peer.

As a cancer survivor, I am glad his suffering is over, but he will be missed greatly.

Sounds like a great, intelligent, accomplished man.
He lived down the street from me for so many years, yet I never had the opportunity to meet him.
My condolences to the family.
