Board to Consider Proposed District Rezoning

Public meetings will provide an overview of options

Sizable population spikes in several Las Cruces Public School board districts will require elected boundaries to be redrawn, a process triggered by the 2020 decennial census and required by state and federal law. Several public meetings to provide an overview of proposed changes have been scheduled, and the public is invited to provide feedback to the district.

The overall population of all five districts represented by members of the Las Cruces Public School  Board of Education was 149,000 in 2010. In the 2020 census, that number rose to 159,507. Districts 4 and 5 saw significant changes, while Districts 2 and 3 saw a decline in population. District 1 only saw a 1.4% increase. According to the New Mexico Secretary of State, public school districts must be equally balanced within 5% of the average population.

Changes to election boundaries are different from school redistricting.
