SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico lawmakers debated a handful of gun-related bills during the 2024 session. One of the bills that has made it all the way to the governor’s desk is a proposed ban on guns in polling places.

Senate Bill 5, sponsored by a few Democratic lawmakers, makes it a misdemeanor to bring a loaded or unloaded firearm within 100 feet of the door of a polling place while voting is in progress.

The bill does provide exemptions for law enforcement officers carrying out their duties, lawful businesses, and individuals in their cars. Individuals with a concealed firearm are also exempt, if they have a valid concealed handgun license. The governor has until March 6 to sign the bill for it to become law.
