Association Health Plan

What is an AHP?

Association Health Plans (AHPs) expand access to affordable health coverage, especially for employees of small organizations. These collaborative plans make it easier for small employers to band together to offer lower cost, "large company," health insurance.

How do Association Health Plans work?

  • AHPs are group health plans that employer groups and associations offer to provide health coverage for employees.
  • AHPs allow small employers to band together to purchase the types of coverage that are typically only available to large employers, which can be less expensive and better tailored to the needs of their employees.
  • Department of Labor rules allow AHPs to be formed based on common geography or industry of the participating groups.
  • An AHP could offer coverage to some or all qualifying employers in a state or it could offer coverage to businesses in a trade or industry group nationwide.

Why choose an AHP?

Medical insurance costs are expected to more than double over the next 8 to 10 years. To change the course of healthcare costs, credit unions need to do something different and better. The power of collaboration among credit unions continues to be a core reason for our success as a movement. A collaborative healthcare model for credit unions is the best strategy to combat the rising cost of medical insurance and employee benefits.

A Successful Launch!

In 2019, InterLutions, through its innovative I-Care: Employee Benefits solution, successfully launched an Association Health Plan (AHP) for small and mid-sized credit unions. The AHP launched with nearly 500 total insured credit union employees and delivered on average of 12% in cost savings.

Not only has our AHP proven to save credit unions a significant amount on their employee benefits costs, we are also delivering enhanced technology services with expanded resources to credit union human resources departments.

The I-Care Association Health Plan is expanding into multiple states. If you have not yet evaluated this collaborative model, or if you have any questions about this solution, please contact us to discuss.
